Welcome to Lynn Crain's guestblog

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for dropping by and seeing me here at the Love Romances and More blog. First, let me apologize for not responding quickly in advance as there are two things happening in my life which are making me slow. One: I became a grandmother while I was in NOLA for the EPICon. My two grandsons were born just this past Tuesday evening and I am soooo excited. Two: I had a horrible alergy attack while I was in NOLA with all the new pollen and humidity. The alleries gave me a runny nose and the humidty made it go into overdrive. Therefore, I have a cough from hades and I’m feeling miserable most mornings. Now, I’m back home all of this should just go away very soon.

But this leads me right into my topic for discussion today…what’s a writer to do when they can’t write?

I’ve been recently asked that question by many writers and I’ll tell you exactly like I tell them: It depends what you’re writing and what the problem is.

First, if you’re ill, you just do the best you can. IMHO, if you are not feeling well, rest is the only sure fire way to get one’s brain back to normal and in the writing mood once again. Since I have allergy days quite frequently in both the spring and the fall, I make sure my daily word count is exceeded so that I can make up for those days of the pounding head and take the rest I sorely need.

Now, if it’s because I can’t get my Muse going, that in itself is a completely different thing. There are a few techniques I use to try and get things flowing again. Here’s my list:

1. Listen to music – when nothing comes, I will sit down and listen to music as I attempt to write. Again, the type of music depends upon what I’m writing. Something classical just won’t do if I’m writing a battle scene so I make the music appropriate to what I’m doing.

2. Write anything – the day doesn’t always start good and I don’t always start on my story right away. Sometimes, the best I can do has nothing to do with what I’m writing. So I just write. Usually by the end of the second hour, I’m back on track for the story.

3. Plot a new story – I have a lot of series going and sometimes the best thing for me is to move away from the story I’m working on and start plotting the next one. For many of my stories, I am a pantser which means I just work it out in my head and sit down to write. However, when I’m working on a series I have to make sure that I don’t violate something I’ve previously done in the series. This also allows me to plan new and different things for the books.

4. Read – I can’t say this enough, read the genre that you write. If you’re doing urban fantasy, read urban fantasy, if you’re doing futuristic, read futuristic. You must know your market and you will never gain that knowledge unless you read the genre.

5. Take care of yourself – What I mean by this is get a massage, take a walk, talk to your kids, make love with your husband or significant other. It can’t all be about the writing because without you there would be no writing.

Using one or all of these techniques work for me. Some of them might work for you. Put together your list of what to do when the muse is gone and try those first. Something should put you back on track. Hope you get something from my ramblings.

See you all around the net.

Captive Illusions Book 2: Merrick and Jenna
By Lynn Crain
Coming to Extasy Books in 2010

Adult Excerpt:

“Crying now?”

Her head snapped up. When had he come into the room? “Not really,” she stated quietly, turning her head in the direction of his voice. “Just thinking about things that can never be.”

“What things?” The whisper came from next to her ear.

“Things you wouldn’t understand,” she stated more firmly, convinced that she couldn’t let him know just how he affected her or her body.

“I can understand a lot of things,” Merrick replied.

The touch of his warm tongue on her neck made her jump and her heart race. “What – what are you doing?” she questioned.

“Come now. A hunter like you should know these things.”

She snorted. “You think you know everything, don’t you?”

“What an unladylike noise coming from you. Tsk – tsk. We’ll have to train you better.”

“Train me? You think you can train me?” Jenna shook her head in amused disgust. “And I supposed you’re already trained?” She was amazed at the sound of her voice. It was firm, strong and confident which was so unlike how she really felt.

Merrick’s rich laughter filled the room. “How can anything wild be tamed?” he questioned from somewhere in front of her.

“How indeed,” she answered with more confidence than she felt.

“Maybe you need a lesson about training.”

The touch on her inner thigh was warm and brief. Although, she couldn’t see him she could feel him and he was very close.

“There’s no reason to keep my blindfold on now, is there?”

Breath again caressed her inner thigh before a quick kiss that made her crotch tighten in anticipation. Just what was happening to her?

“I suppose not but are you sure you want to see everything I’m going to do to you?”

Jenna sighed. “Merrick, I have faced life’s challenges with my eyes wide open each and every time. Why should this time be any different?”

“Why indeed?”

She felt his hands at the back of her head. Soon the silken scarf was around her neck and she was looking into the bluest eyes she had ever seen. Her breath quickened as those eyes watched her intently. “Why are you staring at me?” she questioned softly.

“You’re beautiful,” he answered without hesitation. “And I’d like to hear your explanation of why I should kill a beautiful woman.”

Jenna felt the heat in her cheeks. She had wanted to hear those words from someone for so long and here, a sworn enemy, told her the very thing she needed and wanted to hear most. “Thank you.”

“You’re very welcome.” He ran his fingers along her bare body in a straight line, paying special attention to her breasts and legs. Kneeling in front of her between her legs, he ran his hands along her inner thighs, his hands rough in places like someone who worked the land for many years. “But you still haven’t told me why you think I’m going to kill you.”

She licked her lips slowly. “I betrayed you and your clan. What more is there to say?”

“Hardly. If it hadn’t been you it would have been someone else,” he practically purred in her ear as he took in another deep breath. “What I really want to know is all your sexual fantasies. All of them. And don’t try to hide one thing from me. I smelled your anticipation the moment I walked into the room.” He pulled the scarf off her neck completely and looked at her face as if judging what her reply would be.

Her heartbeat went up a notch. “Why?”

“I plan to fulfill each and every one of them.”

“Really. And just how do you plan to do that?” Jenna stared at him when what she really wanted to do was to lick her lips in the anticipation she was told she possessed. She had a lot of fantasies that she expected never to be fulfilled. And a lot of those fantasies had nothing to do with sex but more with a lifetime full of precious moments and a loving mate.

Slowly, he leaned his head forward to breathe hot, moist air on her inner thigh. The soft, erotic touch made her jump slightly. No man had ever touched her in this way. But then again, this was no ordinary man, she reminded herself, willing her body not to betray her.

“What I want to know is if a little girl like you has ever been well and truly fucked?”

“I’ve had sex before,” she stated and swallowed hard. She had to be careful so her voice wouldn’t give him a hint of what she truly wanted.

“That’s not what I asked. Sex isn’t necessarily being well and truly fucked.”

He looked up at her from between her legs. What the hell was he talking about? Sex was sex, right? “I don’t understand.” She knew confusion was plainly written on her face. What on earth was he talking about?

“How about if I give you an example of foreplay? My kind of foreplay. You know the type that gets a woman really hot and bothered. Even more hot and bothered than your smell would indicate.” He sat his chin on the chair between her legs and appeared to breathe deeply. “Surely someone has eaten you before. A scrumptious morsel like you must have had that pleasure more than once.”

Jenna felt her eyes grow big. Yes, she had heard about such things from the other women. She blinked. “I can’t say that I have.”

“Well…let me be the first,” he murmured and slowly began to lick and nip at her inner thighs.

Willing herself not to clinch, she desperately tried hard not to react. “I wouldn’t do that,” she breathed heavily.

He raised his eyes but did nothing to move his mouth from his journey. “Why not?”

Think of something, she thought feverishly. “I smell funny,” she blurted then groaned. He had already told her that he could smell her. She could feel his chuckle against her leg.

“Couldn’t think of anything else?”

She was miserably lost and she knew it. “I’ve never…”

“Good, then I’ll be your first. I want to be your first on a lot of things. Now scoot your ass close to the edge of the chair.”

Javed Malik, a younger junior officer who keeps her blood pumping with just a glance. With secrets coming to light, can Bekka, Javed and their allies find a way to fight the war that if unchecked will destroy them all? Will Bekka give into the desire that Javed ignites inside her or wills he walk away from the one man destined to be hers for all time?

MORE THAN ROBOTICS is the second book in Ms. Crain’s Orchard Series and it continues the story from the first book, Fluke. It is a wild and entertaining ride from start to finish with intriguing characters, lots of action and some really sensual scenes that keep the story flowing nicely. I loved the dynamics of Bekka Taylor, a captain of her dream star ship and determined to enjoy her life even if she didn’t have a lover who accepted her fiery nature. Enter in Lt. Javed Malik, a younger officer who keeps Bekka’s blood racing with just a smoldering glance and a secret that only she has knowledge of. Ms. Crain delivers a fiery story with two main characters that are intriguing and both hold secrets that come out throughout the course of the storyline.

Meet Captain Bekka Taylor, a woman with just three goals in life: to command her own star ship, grow old gracefully and have a lover to accept every inch of her. Two out of three were acceptable to her until the hunky Lt. Javed Malik came aboard and threw her entire world upside down. Will she let Javed into her life and in the process throw away her career? Bekka is a woman every reader can relate to. I loved her insecurities even though she was determined to not show it in front of her crew. Desires flaring between the two had me fanning my face even as I flipped the pages to read what would happen next. Javed Malik is a sexy hero who smolders on the pages as he delights and seduces Bekka while they run for their lives from the people determined to destroy them. These two characters are perfect for each other and add in some entertaining secondary characters that kept the story flowing nicely; you got a story that keeps you enthralled from start to the climatic finish.

MORE THAN ROBOTICS
is a thrilling and engaging read that will keep you glued to your seat. I loved the way Ms. Crain writes and she doesn’t disappoint her readers with this thrilling sequel to Fluke. I just hope it won’t be long until we get another taste of the Orchard Series. If you enjoy adventure, love on the run and exceptional characters than grab MORE THAN ROBOTICS and be prepared to settle in for an enjoyable afternoon of reading pleasure.

That Magic Number

I was sitting at my desk the other day, uploading my covers to one of the many promotional groups I belong to when I thought to myself just how pretty they all looked together. So pretty in fact, I called my dear husband (DH) in to see them. His reaction was even more profound than mine as he didn’t realize with the publication of More Than Robotics I will have hit number twenty.

Now, my DH is a wonderful man but until that moment when I showed him twenty different covers, it never dawned on him just how many books and novellas I had written. It floored him to realized I still have about four books, all in the 40-70K range, due before the end of the year with at least one being published in November and December respectively. Next year is looking even better on the release front.

The number is a lot to those of you unpublished but to my author friends it may be just a drop in the bucket. It is a milestone to me because see I never really thought I’d be here. Maybe I should better explain my comment...LOL! I have always known my writing is good. I have always known my writing would get better with everything I write. I know I can write fast and most of the time clean. And when it’s not clean, I have the tools to make it as good as I can.

What I didn’t know was it would be so hard to keep moving forward. And the problem is with me, not what I write or my publishers as I have two factors going against me. One is I get bored easily. My life is a reflection of that boredom in many ways. I have changed jobs like I change clothes and other than writing, I’ve never decided just what I want to be when I grow up. I have chased the almighty dollar and had jobs I’ve loved as well as hated. None more so than writing and I’m convinced if I had just started earlier by keeping my nose to the grindstone, I would be a lot further along than I am now.

Getting back to my boredom, I am bored so easily in fact my idea file holds over 180 ideas I’ve yet to develop. Yeah, I’ve come to grips with the fact I will never develop everything in that file. But the file is my crutch in many ways, a thing I hold dear as if I ever get bored or need a new idea, it’s readily available. Along with this boredom sometimes comes a fear I will never complete a story. Now I have twenty good ones to my name. I have to keep reminding myself, I’ve done it twenty times before and I can do it twenty more times. I just have to keep working at it and moving forward.

Now the second one is more a combination of things which adds up to just one: fear of success. Now fear of success is much like fear of failure in that it can grab you at any time with any intensity. I have said many times during talks I’m afraid people will someday find out I’m a fake, that this isn’t what I’ve worked my whole life for when I know deep down it is. Some days I just can’t believe I wrote all those books. I’m also afraid a lot of the ‘what’s next’ as I start thinking about bestseller status should I ever be so lucky.

Part of the reason I feel this way is I’m a perfectionist. Sometimes I will stop a project because something in it has made me think I’ll never get it perfect. Again, I have to keep reminding myself that’s what I have an editor for and it’s their job to make sure it’s right. Mine too but as we all know, most of us can’t edit ourselves to that perfection because we will always find something wrong.

The other part of reason number two is I allow myself to get distracted by life, things I do, challenges I take up such as workshops, books and a host of other things like email. I know people get frustrated with me but even though I can do a million things at once, there are times I need total quiet to concentrate. My DH didn’t understand for the longest time why I wanted doors on my office.

Well, to put it simply, for them all to leave me alone when I had them closed...LOL! See, right now, my office has openings on two walls with no doors. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what I’m doing, if they all want something they will come in to visit or get my opinion. Some days it is a constant reminder I am working on my next project. It’s one of the reasons I am up long hours after they are in bed and when they are at school or at work. It leaves me little time to sleep right now, but at least I am getting more writing accomplished than before just by using the little to no sleep method. Not the brightest thing I’ve ever done but certainly the most productive. LOL!

Still, fear of success can grip you hard and you have to remind yourself everyday you’re writing something worthwhile, something people will want to read. And because of these two reasons, I have to schedule my time very carefully. I have a calendar and Excel spreadsheets galore to make sure I am keeping pace with the goals I have set. Matter of fact, the DH is so freaked out I am absolutely anal about writing because I am not this way about any other item in my life. My mood can be gauged by if I’ve had my writing fix for the day.

So, see, every time I finish a book, it is a major accomplishment for me especially if I sold the book on spec. For me, selling a book on spec can be really traumatic since I’m a pantser and not once have I ever exactly written a book to a synopsis. My characters take over then all hell breaks loose. I’ve learned to go with the flow, adjusting as necessary and most times the book is even better than the one I first proposed.

For those who are still on the outside looking in, I know sometimes it all looks so seamless, so easy. I write fast, I have good titles and most of the time a great book which gets good reviews. I’m lucky as I almost never have to see a blank screen once I get started with a project, I am self-entertaining and most of the time propel myself forward easily. It’s the getting started and keeping started that can be my downfall.

But like many other authors, I have some inner demons which need to be conquered every time I start a book. The final battle is only won when I see my cover at my publisher’s website. Then and only then, do I realize I have increased my magic number by one. And once again, I can dazzle myself with the wonderful reality of it all, knowing just how very blessed I am to have a great family, wonderful publishers, great editors, fabulous critique partners and writer friends all topped with a ton of readers who make each and every day so very special. Thank you all for being a part of this writer’s wonderful life.

CLICK TO PURCHASE! Kelsey never imagines that a night out with friends would end up changing her life. When she finds herself at the mercy of a man who dominates her at every level and awakens something inside her that has her wondering if she can accept the wanton person behind the controlled woman she has become. Will the illusion shatter after one night of wild and unbridled passion with her capturer and will Kelsey be able to accept the man who wants to love her heart, body and soul?

CAPTIVE ILLUSIONS 1: IAIN & KELSEY
is the start to a really sexy series by author Lynn Crain. I have to admit the way it sounded in the beginning the story might have been a little too “hardcore” for my reading pleasure but I was pleasantly surprised as you get introduced to Kelsey and Iain, two very different characters but the same under it all. Kelsey has had some really dark fantasies. You know the ones…where you are kidnapped and taken by force to depths you never knew existed. When her fantasies come to life, Kelsey finds herself at the mercy of a man she can not place yet calls to her on a level she never knew she had. I really enjoyed how Kelsey threw off her inhibitions and let the inner wanton out to play with Iain and in the process Kelsey finds herself meeting the woman inside, destined to be the mate of a man who stirs her like no other.
CAPTIVE ILLUSIONS 1: IAIN & KELSEY definitely delivers one kinky scene after another but that is the icing on the cake as the reader finds herself drawn to the story underneath it all. Can Iain keep Kelsey once she finds out the truth about him? Will Kelsey be able to accept the man who holds her captive in more ways than one and accept the change that she underwent while being dominated by Iain? I liked how the characters interacted with each other and Ms. Crain brought some depth to them as the adventures continued with Kelsey. If you enjoy a story where the male hero is one hot dominant alpha male and the female worthy to be his mate, then grab CAPTIVE ILLUSIONS book 1. The story of Iain and Kelsey has me hoping I don’t have to wait long for Captive Illusions book 2 in the future.

FLUKE is a delightful novella set in distant future. Ms. Crain does a great job keeping the reader entertained throughout the pages and the mystery of Fallon’s missing memories is one that had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the way the characters interacted with the secondary characters and Ms. Crain’s writing left me spellbound till the very end.

FLUKE tells the story of Fallon Montgomery, a brilliant engineer, trying to figure out why her mind feels like someone scrambled it. Her memories are feeling more and more forced yet things are not adding up as Fallon finds herself drawn in a struggle that will leave her no choice excerpt tp fight to stay alive and discover the truth about what happened to her. Welcome to Lynn Crain's guestblog

Welcome Ms. Lynn Crain to Love Romances and More, thank you for joining us.

You’re welcome and thanks for having me.

Did you always want to become a writer?

Yes. I started writing when I was 11 years old and have been doing it in one form or another since then.

What is the most, and the least interesting fact about writing?

For me, the most interesting fact is that I get to go to new and different places everyday. I’m not stuck on doing the same thing every day. The least interesting fact about writing is it is hard work. I get many people thinking it’s a glamorous job and everything is always great. There are days when I don’t want to write but make myself, there are days when I just wish I could travel the world with my husband and there are days when I know this is all I’ve ever wanted to be. Writing, like any profession, has good and bad aspects. It is one of those careers where you have to learn to go with the ups and downs and have a very thick skin.

How did you celebrate your first release? Do you have a special ritual for celebrating a book release?

I don’t recall that we had a big celebration or anything. My family and I went to a nice dinner. They all knew I had been working for it most of my life and were very happy with me.

I usually try to give myself something special when I have a new release any more since I have 14 and the number is going up. LOL!

How did your family react to fact that you also write romance novels? Have your family read your books?

My family has always supported me in anything I do and they know I write what I love. Romance is the genre that gives the most opportunity to new writers. I’ve branched out into other areas as well. I write erotic romance and science fiction plus I also do a lot of cross genre which combines all my loves.

Most authors are also avid readers. Is this the case with you? If so, who are some of your favorites? Have any influenced your writing?

Everything I read influences my writing. I wouldn’t be a writer if it didn’t. Right now, I’m on a science fiction romance kick. I’m reading Katherine Allred’s Close Encounters and after her, I have a few Linnea Sinclair’s in the stack as well as Vicki Peterson. I also read at least 1-2 ebooks a week as well.

Your characters come to life in your books. Do you feel each of your characters live with you as you write? Do their lives sometimes take over a part of your life? Can you name an example? Do you have living role models for your characters?

Absolutely. They are always with me when I write. My DH has told me that there are times when I first wake up where I’m talking to my characters and not him. LOL!

Sometimes it is hard to pull myself out of my books and return to the real world. A lot of this has to do with the fact some of my worlds are complicated places and I totally immerse myself in them. It takes a minute to shift. It’s like I’m in another dimension, hearing, seeing, smelling what I’ve created.

A good example would be the two books I’m working on right now. One is a science fiction erotic romance called More Than Robotics from my Orchid series and is set in a very distance time from now where our world is a group of space faring people. The other book is from my Protectors series call Of Earth and Fire. All the characters have a paranormal ability caused by technology and I use local settings for this series totally which definitely brings it to the forefront of my mind. When I’m writing and I try to pull myself from one of my worlds, I always have a moment of disorientation because I have basically embedded myself there.

Sometimes I have real life role models for my characters but most of the time I don’t. They’re all from my imagination. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use characteristics from people I know. There is always something of myself and my husband in the hero and heroine. It makes it easier to write. LOL!

Where do you get the inspirations for your books?

I think a better question would be, where don’t I get my inspiration? I take inspiration from everything. When my husband travelled a lot, I used to love to go to the airport early just so I could watch people. I am never without a pad and paper so I can write ideas, titles, characters, you name it, I write it down.

Do you find it difficult at times to write love scenes?

Sometimes. There are days when I just can’t get into it. I’ve been know to write in bold letters ‘insert love scene here’ in places. Most of the time it isn’t a problem as I start getting in the mood just by writing the story as making love is the normal progression of things. The times I really have problems are when I’ve stopped in the middle of a scene for whatever reason. It’s hard to get the same intensity as you had when you first started. Then I have to set the mood by listening to music, reading other love scenes I’ve written or just reading books period.

What is your favorite book from the books that you have written so far? Who are your favorite hero and heroine, and why?

Wow…this is hard…I would say the Orchid and Protectors series I’m working on for favourite books. It’s hard having just one favourite. I love all my books because if I didn’t I wouldn’t be writing the stories. My favourite characters are the two couple I’m working on right now. I just love Captain Bekka Taylor and Lieutenant Javed Malik as they are totally different from anyone I’ve ever done before. I also have the same feelings for the couple in Protectors, Endy Fyre and Hayden Keegan. They are almost opposite in every way but they need each other to complete their mission.

I just love these characters and find out something new about them each day.

Which book was the hardest to write and which the easiest?

I’m not sure there is one. I throw all my effort into the work or two I’m doing at the time. If the writing isn’t going well, it’s hard, if it is, it’s easy.

If there was one book I had to say this about it was probably my first book, Captive Illusions: Iain and Kelsey because it was delving into an area I knew nothing about but yet I was so driven to complete it, it was easy.

I’ve noticed that as my career is progressing, the drive to get things completed is different. It consumes me in a more known way whereas in the beginning, I was just trying to get the story done and submitted. Now, I have deadlines and write to those deadlines constantly which can make things hard or easy depending on the day.

If you could change places with one character from your books, who would it be and why?

In this moment in time it would be Bekka Taylor. I would love to be a Captain of a space ship who explores and saves other people and worlds. This character just has such a purpose in her life that is bigger than life.

If you could travel through time to visit a special time period or famous person, what or who would it be and why?

There are a lot of places in time I would love to visit and while I know you said one, actually two float to the top. One would be ancient Egypt as I am fascinated with the culture and everything about that period of history.

The other one would have to be the Vikings when they first went to Scotland which is basically, The Dark Ages, because things were so new and young and wild. I don’t know any other way to explain it at all.

I just think both of those places could teach me so much as each of them contributed to who we are as a society now.

Do you listen to music while you are writing and if so what music is it?

I always listen to music and it is a real eclectic mix. Most of the time I listen to soundtracks from movies I’ve seen with my favorite being the Conan soundtracks. Add to this mix celtic music, Melissa Etheridge, Matchbox Twenty, All American Rejects and a ton of others.

If you could choose of your books for a movie, which one would it be and who would you as the cast?

This is hard…and again…it would be two books, More Than Robotics and Of Earth and Fire. But the one I would do first would be More Than Robotics as I think it would have the most appeal. I’ve never really thought of a female lead but I absolutely know who I would have for the male. It would be Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes. He’s the first one I thought of when I started this character. He’s just yummy.

Are you working on anything right now, and can you tell us a teaser about these projects?

Here’s a teaser from More Than Robotics (eXtasy Books):

“That’s all for now and it’s most of what I know. But we all share the same concerns as I’m sure you have. Javed has the specifics on our next contact. And please don’t get mad at me for the unconventional way I have instructed him to give those orders to you. It was necessary.”
I turned to look at him suspiciously. “What is she talking about?”
In less than the blink of an eye, he was again by my side, pulling me up from my chair, his hands taking my face to gaze in my eyes. “Don’t struggle,” he whispered close to my ear. “I think we have prying eyes.” His lips came down fiercely on mine, his tongue snaking in to dominate me and I wanted to do the very thing he asked that I not do. Instead I tried to let myself enjoy the moment as it had been quite some time since I had had this type of human contact.
My hands gripped his waist and pulled him even closer to me. I could feel his legs press harder into me as his arms went completely around me. Within moments, I could feel the hard bulge of his body and mine responded in kind. There was nothing more I wanted to do except rip his clothes off that luscious male form.
He pulled away from me and shuddered, resting his forehead against mine. “We should really stop right now.” His brown eyes looked deep into mine and I nearly passed out as his next words flashed across my consciousness. You are an amazing woman and rest assured, we will finish this.
The last bit had exploded across my brain and I raised a shaky hand to rub my forehead. It was as if he were right inside me, whispering his thoughts.
Don’t fight it. Let it happen. The clonedroids helped us to perfect one of their technologies for our us. This is the major way they communicate between each other. You are now the proud owner of some audiobotic nanotechnology. They attach to your nerves for hearing and other pertainent areas of your brain associated with the function. From now on, we’ll be able to communication this way as we are attuned only to each other. No one else is on this frequency.
I glanced quickly toward the camera I knew Trevor had poised on us. You realize that Trevor was the only one spying on us, don’t you?
A slow lazy smile crossed his face and he gently caressed my cheek. That’s what you think. The other ability that we’ve been given is you will actually sense when someone is a clonedroid. It’s an ability they have as well as they can immediately tell who is clonedroid or who is human. Fallon 2 has been so helpful in our development of these abilities.
I swallowed hard. It would be hard but I knew what I had to do. “Just what do you think you were doing?”
A brief look of surprise crossed his face. Bravo! Well done. Fallon said that you’d be quick to adapt. And because you adapted so quickly, I know you haven’t been brainwashed. Those who have been have some difficulty when trying to access certain aspects of their brain which are necessary when using this technology.

Here’s one from Of Earth and Fire (Loose Id)

It appeared Aingeal tried hard not to laugh, while Lukas Everhard, her soulmate, didn’t even attempt to hold back as the rich sound of his mirth filled the room.
“Endy, maybe you need to relax,” Aingeal said and turned to Lukas, frowning at him. “Do you think we should get her drunk or something? But then again with you standing there laughing, no one can calm down.”
“No,” I stated a little too emphatically knowing liquor was an item I shouldn’t even touch. Been there, done that.
She turned back to me still frowning. “It would make you loosen up. And you definitely need to settle down. You’re so uptight and it’s making me uptight.”
“Honey, so would a massage or a steam bath or any number of different techniques. We’ve got to give her some time. Are you afraid you’ll hurt someone, Endy?”
Lukas looked at me, sympathy written plainly on his face and my mind drifted back to all my previous encounters with my ‘gift’ as they like to call it. While I didn’t remember anything bad happening when I worked with fire, something held me back from fulfilling my duty the moment I walked into this place. It was as if a very bad encounter could happen here if I did what I was meant to do. “I don’t think so. But if like you, my memory is clogged up, who knows what I’m capable of doing or not doing?”
Aingeal sighed and shook her head. “Girl, we all have our job and each of us is integral to the whole. Let’s try it again.”
I sat on the lab bench as I saw her toss an orb from hand to hand. Aingeal made the task look so easy. Slowly, I stood, held out my palm and felt the energy start to grow warm. Soon a small blue flame flickered in the center and I nurtured it into a full orb, making it get bigger by opening my mind even more to the power lurking just below the surface.
“That’s it, Endy. Concentrate and relax. Your hair is starting to change color like you said it would and you’re doing great!”
“Hey, Lukas, what —”
Without thinking, I turned, threw my flame at the intruder and watched it arc around him. He stood there, arms in front of his face. Eventually he peeked around his forearms and stared at me. Mortified at what I had done, I didn’t realize the flames inched up my arm toward my face and hair. I nearly died when I realized just who I had hit as I tried my hardest to get the flames under control.
“Sorry,” I muttered and started shaking my arm. Sitting down on the lab bench again, I started to pat the fire to put it out. While I might not burn, my clothes and sometimes my hair had the tendency to spontaneously combust when I was under an enormous amount of stress.
Lukas tossed a look in Aingeal’s direction. Nodding slightly, they both seemed to come to some unspoken agreement. “Why don’t I introduce you two? Endy Fyre, I’d like you to met Haydn Keegan.”
“Pleased to meet you,” I muttered and stuck out the hand which was not on fire.
“Endy, good to meet you too.”
He looked at me strangely as his big hand engulfed mine. A thousand fireworks set off by his touch lit up my insides. I had seen him in the mess hall but hadn’t been able to gather the courage to speak to him at all. Tall with boyish good looks and oozing with charm, his light green eyes reminded me of the cool serene waters surrounding a tropical island. Wonderful earth and wood scents with a slight undertone of musk were associated with him wherever he went. And his body…oh lordy me…his body was made for wild, wicked things. Things I wanted to do only with him.
“Ah…your eyebrow’s on fire,” he commented casually, removing his hand from mine to help me put out the flame. “Are you all right?”
Now I was more than mortified, I was humiliated too. I shut my eyes and shook my head. “No, I think I’ve done enough damage to myself and the world for one day. Don’t you?” Not waiting for an answer, I ran from the lab and back to my room intent on dousing the flames with a cold shower. Heaven knew that wasn’t the only reason to feel the cool liquid flow over my body.
I was in lust.
