Chess has been asked by The Church to work on a special assignment with the Black Squad agency. Before she can be told the details, she has to agree to a Binding Spell. As this will mean a large advance will be deposited into her account, she accepts. She goes through the ceremony and now, she cannot tell anyone about what she is working on otherwise she will be in a lot of pain and probably death would be involved too. But Bump, her drug dealer finds out about what she is up to and insists that Terrible goes along with her. Bump is a kind of mafia boss of the area and Terrible his strongman. There are body pieces showing up, underground tunnels filled with strange, meat-eating children. The Churches spells are back-firing on them and Chess has to deal with some seriously bad magic. The only man she can trust is Terrible, but he’s decided that as she lied to him once, she is no longer trustworthy.

So, I am coming in on the third book in this series, and to be honest, I don’t know if I want to read the first two.

Oh, the story was pretty exciting. Lots of adventure, action, blood and guts and some really nasty magic kept me turning the pages. Chess and her Black Squad partner were running into some nasty situations and barely made it out with their lives. The world-building is cleverly done and the characters are full of flaws and somewhat realistic. I say, somewhat because Chess bothered me. I don’t know if it was because the words church and drugs were together or not. Chess is a drug addict and hides her addiction from her bosses. Terrible is basically her dealer and they have a relationship. Between getting beaten, bashed, cut, burned, chased and almost raped, Chess is battling to get drugs into her body to keep her going. I felt this was all a little unrealistic. I kept thinking that if that were me…I think I would crawl into a corner and die. Still, although it wasn’t easy for me personally to get through this book, I know that there will be those out there who will devour it.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.

Meagen Kelly always dreams of a beautiful rose garden. When bad weather comes, she knows that something bad will happen. When the weather is nice and sunny, then she knows that the next day will be a good one. She doesn’t know what to think when a figure appears in the garden, a strange figure.

The next day she meets…well, bumps into Ric Thornhill. Ric is on a mission. He needs to find the heir to the Rose family and if he doesn’t, his boss will make him stay in the human world and he will lose all his powers. He only has five days.

Meagen is surprised to find out that she is half-elf, half-human and that Ric is all elf. They have a very strong attraction to each other and Ric has vowed to protect her. He needs to get her to the seelie court right away, but there are others who are determined to make sure she doesn’t make it. She needs to come into her powers, catch up with the protocol of the court and find out just what is happening between her and Ric. She has become a political tool and may be at the mercy of a jealous Queen.

When Meagen and Ric meet, the sexual tension fairly sizzles from the first moment and continues until they can deliciously consummate their budding attraction. Ms Spencer Pape knows how to write some sizzling love scenes and emotions run high. I loved both these characters. Meagen is an artist, and when she discovers who she really is, she is able to accept most of what Ric says. Ric is a tall, handsome, blond elf who I wouldn’t mind meeting myself.

The plot is very exciting, well paced and had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I was really looking forward to Meagen meeting the Queen. The Queen seemed to be a hard, ice-cold woman who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted, but she seemed fair too. There is a good mix of descriptive prose and action. And there is plenty of action. I was sitting on the edge of my seat a few times.

This is the exact type of story that I highly enjoy and Ms Spencer Pape did not disappoint. I am looking forward to reading another book in this world. I especially want to find out what is up between Meagen’s new found cousin, Aidan and a friend of Meagen’s, Elise, a witch.

Be right back!

Captain Scott Boulder is fighting against the bloodlust he has acquired since his fight with the vampire Andre Espinoza de Madrid. A vampire, who is thankfully dead. Or is he? Together with Leah Maguire, they embark on a deadly mission to capture genetically altered subjects who have escaped. These are government experiments gone wrong and Scott fears that he too, will soon be among them. Leah has faith in him and he has friends who are willing to help him. One of these subjects is Rachel Ackart. She is powerful, beautiful and under Andre's influence. Andre has led her to believe she can bring back her old lover, but it is himself he wants to bring back. If that happens, then death and destruction will visit the earth. Scott and Leah have to stop her and even though their attraction for each other spirals, they know that the main mission is to save the world.

This was an exciting read. These two talented authors have corroberated to give their readers a truly creepy thrilling read. I know I was hanging onto the edge of my seat and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I loved the two main characters. Leah is an empath and is able to defend herself with magic. Scott is tortured by the fact that he has been contaminated, but is valiantly holding his own and keeps his eyes on the goal. There are lots of breathtaking moments when you think it's all over and there are some very tender moments when Leah and Scott give in to their passion. There are lots of secondary characters who give the story life and depth. If you enjoy darker stories that thrill and chill, you will certainly like this one. Now I have to go pick up the first one to see how it all began.

Lily is a succubus and one of Satan's Chosen. This means she can enjoy a life that is filled with all the good things and enjoy the friendship of some great supernatural pals. She has a good job with a fashion magazine, and if it weren't for one of her co-workers, it would be perfect. But she has plans for that particular co-worker and at the same time hopefully to close the rift between the Succubi and Incubi. Nathan Coleman, the one human she had fallen in love with, ran when he found out what she actually is. But now she has to work together with him again and the flame is being rekindled. Add another hunk to the mix, Marten, and Lily's head is spinning. There is an assassin out to get her, someone is trying to upset the hierarchy in Hell and her best friends Demon boyfriend is kidnapped. Satan wants her to stay on the job of finding out just who is behind it all and if she actually survives, will it be Nathan or Marten who lays claim to her heart?

I guess you could call this a chick-lit with paranormal elements. After getting by the fashion name dropping and the food descriptions, which made my mouth water, the story itself is very entertaining, sexy and a great adventure. I enjoyed the take on the demon world, especially the fact that Satan is a woman! I enjoyed all the characters in this story, especially Lily, Nathan and Marten. Even though Lily is a succubus, she is just like you and me and is looking for her own love. Nathan really blew it when he left her after finding out what she is, and Marten accepts her for what she is. The tension is high, both the suspense and the sexual tension. I was soon hooked to this story and could hardly put it down. Now I have to get the first book, SUCCUBUS IN THE CITY and won't have to hopefully wait too long for the next book. The only thing that was a bit frustrating is that the story doesn't really end, so you have to get the next book to find out what happens next.

Welcome to Jory Strong's guest blog

Welcome Ms. Jory Strong to Love Romances and More, thank you for joining us.

Thanks for inviting me!

Did you always want to become a writer?

Yes, though it took me years to get serious about pursuing it. It was always “I want to and someday I will”, then one day I realized “someday” would never arrive unless I made it happen by committing myself. After that, there was no quitting, despite having accumulated enough rejection letters over the years to paper a room with them.

What is the most, and the least interesting fact about writing?

I love pretty much all aspects of it, despite the agony I go through before (planning a story and working out as many of the necessary details as possible), during (worrying about getting each scene right), and after a project is finished (total stress as I wonder if readers are going to like the story and be glad they read it).

How did you celebrate your first release? What was it like to see your book in a bookstore? Do you have a special ritual for celebrating a book release?

My first release was an e-book (Supernatural Bonds: Trace’s Psychic). I treated myself to a Starbucks Frappuccino. A big deal since the closest Starbucks is an hour and fifteen minutes away.

The first print release I actually encountered in a store was Supernatural Bonds: Storm’s Faeries. I was thrilled to stumble across it (purely by accident). I immediately got on the phone and called my husband and then my parents. I even contemplated buying a copy and taking it home as a trophy but convinced myself it would be better to let someone else acquire it since I did in fact have author copies already. Anymore I take the day off as a celebration when a book releases.

How did your family react to fact that you also write romance novels? Have your family read your books?

My husband and his parents knew, but I stayed in the closet with respect to everyone else for the first year and a half. My parents are very conservative and live in the Bible-belt. After attending RT Daytona, I decided to tell them, mainly because it was such a thrill to be around so many romance fans and authors. I wanted to share stories and let them in on the fun. I am so glad I did. Sometimes I think my parents enjoy my success as an author more than I do. Once they knew, I stepped completely out of the closet. But no, they don’t read the books. Even if I cut out all the sex, almost everything I’ve written is paranormal in nature, not something my parents and husband enjoy.

Most authors are also avid readers. Is this the case with you? If so, who are some of your favorites? Have any influenced your writing?

Yes, I love reading. My parents are both readers. From an early age, they read to my brother and me, and had us read to them. I try to stop work every night by seven so I can read for at least two or three hours. As far as favorites go, I read widely. Nalini Singh, Robert Crais, Ilona Andrews, Wen Spencer, Michelle Sagara, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, PJ Tracy, JD Robb, and many more—anyone whose story premise, world or characters grab me and whose story telling keeps me turning the pages.

I wouldn’t say they’ve influenced me directly. But everything I read is “food for the muse.” It can’t help but be.

Your characters come to life in your books. Do you feel each of your characters live with you as you write? Do their lives sometimes take over a part of your life? Can you name an example? Do you have living role models for your characters?

Yes, they definitely live with me when I write. They get into my head and I get into theirs. It’s an up close and personal kind of thing, sometimes to the point I’ll actually cry with them when something terrible happens in their lives.

When I’m focused on a story, it does take over my life. There are days I have to make myself step away from the computer. Crime Tells: Calista’s Men was the “worst” when it comes to this. The story and characters dropped into my mind fully formed and it was an absolute race to get the scenes written as they were scrolling through my head. It was the most amazing time, but basically for a solid month, I had zero life because I couldn’t risk being away from the computer and losing a scene. It was totally exhilarating, and I would love for it to happen again!

All my characters are fiction. No living role models.

Where do you get the inspirations for your books?

Any more, it’s more often character driven, as in, a character introduced in a previous story steps forward and demands his or her HEA. Sometimes these stories lend themselves to answering questions or solving problems presented in previous books in the series. The books for Berkley have an over reaching story arc: the return of the Djinn and the ultimate battle for control of Earth. But built into these books is also the chance to explore a lot of different story worlds, everything from a vampire-controlled San Francisco, to the lawless red zone of Oakland, to the shapeshifter-held territories outside of both cities…and more.

Do you find it difficult at times to write love scenes?

Sure. There are times I’m just not in the mood to focus on them, or I’m more interested in pushing forward on the main plot and don’t want to lose the writing momentum I’ve got going or the scenes I see vividly in my mind.

What is your favorite book from the books that you have written so far? Who are your favorite hero and heroine, and why?

This is always a tough question for me. It’s like asking a parent what child they love the most. So I’ll have to qualify my answer by saying it’s subject to change on any given day depending on focus. If forced to choose only one, and not allowed to cheat by picking one erotic romance and one urban fantasy romance, or claiming a tie, I’d say Spider-Touched (the second book set in the post-apocalyptic world of Ghostland). It’s the book I consider the best I’ve ever written, though Ghostland is the book of my heart and The Angelini: Mystic’s Run is the book I consider my best EC title.

Dante and Benito (Crime Tells: Calista’s Men) are in a tie with Fane and Cable (Carnival Tarot: Kiziah’s Reading) for favorite heroes. My favorite heroine…a lot harder choice. Today I’m feeling kick-ass so I’ll say Araña (Spider-Touched) though Skye (The Angelini: Skye’s Trail) is a close second.

Which book was the hardest to write and which the easiest?

Supernatural Bonds: Storm’s Faeries
was the hardest. I can’t even say why, because when I reread it, I love it. But when I was working on it, I thought getting it finished was going to burn me out completely. Crime Tells: Calista’s Men was the easiest. It dropped into my head fully formed and the race was on as I tried to type the scenes as fast as they came to me. I’d love, love, love for another book to arrive that way!

If you could change places with one character from your books, who would it be and why?

Well, if I wanted to stake my claim to the above named favorite heroes, I’d swap places with Kiziah or Calista. Or better yet, Mystic and end up with her three men If I wanted the heroine’s special ability it would have to either be Syndelle (The Angelini: Syndelle’s Possession) or Aisling in Ghostland.

If you could travel through time to visit a special time period or famous person, what or who would it be and why?

I actually wish I could travel into the future. It’s far more interesting to me than the past.

Do you listen to music while you are writing and if so what music is it?

No. I need silence.

If you could choose one of your books for a movie, which one would it be and who would you as the cast?

Crime Tells: Lyric’s Cop, mainly because I’ve been involved in animal issues in the past and while I don’t have time any more to rescue dogs from euthanasia at shelters and place them into good homes as I once did, I still hate it that so many of them are needlessly destroyed every year, or end up in miserable situations because of human irresponsibility and greed. Someone else would have to cast it for me. I don’t have that gift.

Are you working on anything right now, and can you tell us a teaser about these projects?

I just typed THE END on Fallon Mates: Zoë’s Gift. Now starts the editing, refining and polishing process. I’m really, really excited about this story. It’s the first MMF ménage set in this story world (all the others are MFM stories), plus there’s a big revelation and significant movement with respect to the series arc.

For those not familiar with the series, a virus has left the winged races of Belizair (the Amato who have feathered, angel-like wings, and the Vesti, who have suede bat-like wings) unable to reproduce. The only solution so far has been to match unmated males to a human female who carries a certain genetic sequence. That catch, it takes both a Vesti and an Amato male for there to be children.

Since you asked for a teaser, I’ll also mention that as soon as I turn Zoë’s Gift in to EC, I’ll get to work on a new book for Berkley. It’s the third one set in the world of Ghostland and Spider-Touched. The heroine is a gifted human healer who was an important character in Spider-Touched. The hero is a jaguar shapeshifter. As much as I’ve loved being in the world of the Fallon Mates, I can hardly wait to return to this post-apocalyptic one!

Set in a not too distant future where shapeshifters are trying to take over the world, Missy Jane’s THEY CALL ME DEATH is the story of one woman’s battle to live in a world where distinguishing the animals from the humans is becoming more and more difficult every day.

After the shifters come out to the world in a bloody battle that leaves North America divided, Alexia Williams finds herself a soldier for the Combined Human States Army guarding the border that keeps humans and shifters apart. Her husband and son were killed in the initial battle and her life now is nothing but survival and the job. Alexia has become very good at her job and has no sympathy for the animals until one of them saves her life.

Andor is a centuries old golden eagle shifter, looking for human help to find missing shifters he believes are on Alexia’s side of the wall. Through Andor, Alexia discovers that just like people, not all shifters are evil animals. Humans have evil among them too. Andor and Alexia learn to trust each other as they journey into the shifter lands and back in search of the missing shifters.

This reader enjoys stories set in a post apocalypse earth. Missy Jane’s alternative reality highlights the anger and prejudice that come from refusal to try to understand people that are different than us and are viewed as a threat. When Alexia and Andor are forced to spend time working closely together, Alexia discovers that though Andor could be a serious danger to her, he isn’t. Her leery respect turns to love as the story unfolds and we discover who the real animals are in this story.

The storyline moves along quickly as Alexia relearns everything she knows of the shapeshifters while searching with Andor for the missing shifters. The characters are multifaceted with serious trust issues. Alexia’s personal journal is painful and heartwarming. This reader found Missy Jane’s THEY CALL ME DEATH thoroughly entertaining, original and fresh. This is an author to keep on the lookout for.

GARDEN SPELLS by Sarah Addison Allen

Publisher Bantam Discovery
Date published May 2008
ISBN 978-0-553-59032-6
Genre Urban Paranormal
Mass Market Paperback
Reviewed by Pam

The Waverley family has always been different, as is the garden surrounding the old house they grew up in. Claire has become the homebody, cooking for local functions while using her own mix of herbs and flowers. When her sister Sydney comes home with her young daughter, Bay, it turns Claire’s quiet life upside down. Their Aunt Evanelle is also a worry as she gives out gifts the recipients’ don’t always want. They often find a sudden a need for them, making them suspicious of her intent.
Bay finds contentment away from the father she doesn’t like. The garden also welcomes her and here she finds her own magical place, as the slightly crazy apple tree turns everything upside down. Meanwhile Clare keeps running from her new amorous neighbor, Sydney has to deal with the man in her life and Bay watches as the apple tree begins to affect all their lives.

GARDEN SPELLS is a blend of folklore and odd-ball happenings as sisters come together and begin to realize they are more alike than they had ever imagined.
This is a charming, whimsical tale, almost as it was a folktale from days gone past.
Ideal for a lazy afternoon as a relaxing read with a refreshing, sweetly magical story that almost sucks you in to turning the pages over. It’s a tale with no hot sex, so ideal for anyone who prefers a sweeter tale, with irresistible characters. I found the characters easy to relate to and the way the magical plants in the garden were used was pure genius. Even the bad guy was dealt with in an unusual way. With some added information from the Waverly kitchen at the end, I’m sure you’ll find a way to put some magic into your life.

Take care readers, or it may cast a spell or two over you.
