Lady Amelia Willoughby was betrothed by contract, to Thomas Cavendish, Duke of Wyndham, at six months old. On the odd occasion they meet, but she mostly watches and waits from afar. Amelia feels he never thinks about her, unless she’s in front of him. Brought up to be the future Duchess, she has no idea what else she’d do with her life.

Thomas has been bred to control the estates and make the family fortune grow. He likes having a fiancĂ©e, mainly because it keeps the mothers of unattached debutantes, away from his door. When a stranger arrives, Thomas begins to realize perhaps he isn’t the Duke after all. So wonders what will happen, if he’s no longer engaged to Amelia either. Will she still want him, and can he walk away with no regrets?

A mad-cap trip to Ireland instigated by his aunt and Amelia’s father, will determine who has a duchess in the family. It jolts Thomas, who realizes he’s fallen in love but it may be too late he could lose Amelia.

MR. CAVENDISH, I PRESUME, is a delightfully different historical romp that this reviewer really enjoyed because it had so much happening. It has all the right elements with a haughty but handsome hero, and an arch-rival who has his own mind made up about what he wants in life. The autocratic father who thinks he knows all the answers, and is very determined to get his own way. Add the cranky aunt who drives all the other characters into trying to avoid her.

The two enchanting heroines are surprise packages which enrich the tale and add to the background fun. The arrival of a distant cousin stirs up the past, causing a lot of confusion all made easy to follow by this brilliant author. Well written, believable and with a very interesting plot I found myself turning pages to find their fate. The interplay between the characters helped the book flow well, it is a story I recommend if you want something a bit different to curl up with.
