A neighborhood lays in ruins after a night of violence and riots. It isn’t until a body is found…drained of their essence that Connor Grey, ex-Guild investigator, is called in even as he tries to walk away from it all. What he finds once he begins to investigate is layers of secrets, a mystery and more. The murder leads Connor to places that leave clues, clues to the first days of the Fey Guild and as he races against the clock to solve the case; one wrong move will bring destruction upon Boston then the world.

UNCERTAIN ALLIES begins with the aftermath of a deadly riot that causes one Boston Neighborhood to implode. Now Connor Grey is drawn in on a case that will lead to dark secrets, secrets that have lain hidden for centuries. If you haven’t read the series well then you are in for a tough time. Scenes were read where I was going ‘Huh?’ a few times as they mention things from past books and even though I was looking forward to seeing where the story took me, the fact is I got thrown out of the story a few times with me wondering what had happened before in past books. The author creates a wonderful hero in Connor Grey. He is flawed like most humans and has issues galore but you can’t help but root for him even as he faces danger time and again. The story flows nicely even with the few scenes that I mentioned earlier in the review and characters that fairly keep you intrigued from start to finish.

Meet Connor Grey. An ex Guild Investigator, he wants nothing to do with his former employers but he can’t help being curious about the the new murder making all the front pages. Connor is an anti-hero, in my opinion. He can be abrupt, annoying and somehow he is able to wiggle his way into your heart so you can’t help but root for him in the end. The mystery aspect of the storyline was a delight as I love urban fantasy stories that keep me glued to the pages. I haven’t really tried this series out but hope to get to the first book to see how Connor’s story began in the future. The characters are well written, vulnerable without seeming to be whiny yet also strong, confident even as they face evil head on. The author does a really good job in capturing Connor’s inner being and translates that perfectly over the pages. The action and a few twists kept me interested till the end.

UNCERTAIN ALLIES is a wild ride from start to finish. The only drawback was if you haven’t read these in order then some of the plot points mentioned may confuse you a bit like I was. Otherwise this was a really good addition to the urban fantasy genre and I look forward to seeing what else this author has in store for Connor and all his eager readers.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement
