Calia Read has penned one of the best psychological thrillers that this reader has had the pleasure to read this summer in UNRAVEL, a story that will keep you riveted to the story trying to unravel Naomi’s story right up until the very last page.  What an incredible find!

UNRAVEL opens with Naomi waking up in a mental hospital unsure of why she is there.  Then through memories and her retelling her story to her new psychiatrist, we slowly unravel her life story and realize just why she has come to be in the hospital as she too realizes why she is there.

Calia Read does a wonderful job of feeding readers pieces of Naomi’s story bit by bit so that just as the new psychiatrist hears the story, readers hear it as well, giving rise to just as many questions as it gives answers.  Naomi is a very complex character that has you wondering if she belongs in the mental hospital or not the entire time you read the book.  The suspense factor remains high throughout.  The lesser characters, Lochlan, Max, Lana, Lana’s father and the psychiatrist all play pivotal parts in the story yet remain just outside the focus of the story.  Words like fascinating, poignant, razor’s edge, and deeply emotional are all excellent descriptors of UNRAVEL.

Looking back, there were a few instances that this reader thought something that a character said or did was out of place or the author made a minor mistake somewhere, as happens from time to time in even the best of books, only to realize at the end of the book that those instances were clues.  Excellent writing Ms. Read; simply excellent.  Again, what an incredible find!
