THREE -1/2 HEARTS

Annabelle Martin has been married.  Twice. Before she turned thirty. Both marriages were in reaction to her mother, who she was so very close too, died way too young. She has stayed friends with husband number 1, Jeremy. So much so that she knows the exact moment he is going to ask her to marry him again. This is not what Annabelle wants and while she was going to turn down a job offer from her very best friend, Sophie, in Arizona, before Jeremy can pop the question she blurts out that she is moving to Phoenix to take the job with Sophie.  Sophie and her husband, Miguel have arranged what on the surface appears to be an ideal cottage for her to live in.  Ideal if your landlord is an elderly curmudgeon who you expect to yell “get off my lawn” at any moment.

Said landlord, Nick Daire, isn’t exactly an elderly grump. He is, in fact a thirty-something, absolutely gorgeous man who sadly had a stroke several months before and now spends his days being miserable using a wheelchair. He doesn’t want Annabelle on his property but he owed Miguel and Sophie so there she is.  His life wasn’t all roses before the stroke and with Annabelle in his guest cottage he’s not so sure it is now. And then on top of it his younger sister, Lexi, shows up out of the blue after twenty years.

While Nick is fending off Lexi, Annabelle is dealing with a sneaky, passive/aggressive bully at work who is after her job. Can three disparate people come together? Or is it too late for all of them?

I’ve been a Jenn McKinlay fan since the debut of her Cupcake series in 2010.  I’ve missed few of her books and she (almost) never disappoints.  There have been a few lemons in there but pretty much every book is entertaining, has interesting tidbits I hadn’t known before and are just good reads.  WAIT FOR IT is one of those really good reads.  Normally Chik Lit is not my thing, but McKinlay’s are pretty close to sweet romances and sometimes you just need romance in your life.  There were points her cozy mysteries were crossing over into romance and cozy devotees mostly don’t want all that romance and love triangles. I was thrilled when she started writing romance.

WAIT FOR IT deals with an issue we don’t often see in fiction—stroke happening to someone so young. McKinlay deals with it matter of factly and with compassion for those involved.  That Nick is rich makes it somewhat easier for him to navigate his care, but she adds the element of how he cares for those less fortunate.

What she doesn’t tell us is just what is the debt Nick owes Miguel and Sophie. Not that it was a major plot point, I just would have liked to know. When the bully is finally dealt with he was just briefly confronted and tossed out with the trash—I don’t think he was quite done.  Unless there is a second book coming with Lexi and Jackson’s story where he shows up causing trouble, I’m not satisfied that he got his.  Maybe he’ll show up in a cupcake book and Angie and Mel will deal with him. I just want it to happen.

McKinlay tells the story in first person, alternating chapters from Nick and Annabelle’s points of view. The problem is that they both sound the same. There is really nothing differentiating the characters aside from a notation at the beginning of the chapters whose point of view it is. McKinlay is a better writer than that.

The story is entertaining and an easy read. Just what you need to relax and have some romance to take your mind off day to day drama.

FOUR-1/2 HEARTS

Carly DeCusati is happy with her life.  She does what she wants, when she wants, how she wants and who she wants.  Yes, who she wants.  Well, at least she was happy with her life.  With the loss of her job she has to move back to her home town of Bluff Point, at least for the near future.  And that’s not exactly happy news.  She arrives just as her parents are leaving for Florida for the foreseeable future and she’s left living with her younger sister, Gina.  Her relationship with Gina takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level and it’s not pretty.   Oh, and just before her move back to Bluff Point her elderly neighbour in Brooklyn died and left her her parrot, Ike and elderly lab, Saul.  For someone who is just not into commitment the dog and the bird are so not what she wants in her life.  At least she’s still foot loose and fancy free, right?  But that’s about to change.

James Sinclair has loved one woman for just about his whole life.  He saw her once 11 years ago and it was love at first site.  When he sees her again he knows that this time he can’t let her get away.  The thing is, the woman he can’t live without has no interest in a happily ever after.  And to make matters worse, he has secrets, secrets that will send her running as fast as she can from Bluff Point.

I was thrilled when I saw that Jenn McKinlay was starting to write romance and enjoyed the first book in her Bluff Point series, ABOUT A DOG.  ABOUT A DOG was a cute story, more chik litish than contemporary romance and the characters seemed to be a bit juvenile.  McKinlay not only hit her stride in her most recent book in this series, BARKING UP THHE WRONG TREE, she surpassed herself.  She definitely proves the old adage about the spicy woman beneath the stern librarian’s demeanour!  While reading more than one scene I had an image of McKinlay whipping off a pair of practical glasses, shaking out a bun and letting loose.  She writes a toe curling love scene.

There are hints of Angie and Mel from McKinlay’s cupcake series in the personalities of the Maine Crew, but they are definitely their own characters.  Carly goes though some nice and believable changes in the story.  As her history comes out the reader can see how and why she made the choices she did.

James is intense in his feelings for Carly, but is in no way an alpha male which was nice for a change of pace.  I liked Pops and the Sinclair family.  They were a hoot.  There is some nice catching up with Mac and Gavin.

Most of all I loved Ike and Saul.  Ike was just a really fun character and added some awesome humor to the story.

The books are stand alones and can be read out of order because McKinlay gives enough back story to catch you up.

FIVE HEARTS

Proverbial bachelor and town flirt Zack Caine has no intention of settling down—ever.  He’s been perfectly happy moving from woman to woman and never making a commitment.  His brewery is not only successful, he has his friends and really, that’s all he needs.  Aside from his love em and leave em public image, he’s basically a good guy.  He provides scholarships for his brewery girls, is fostering another friend’s poodle, Rufus and when his neighbor’s two little girls show up asking for help to get their kitten off his roof, he’s more than ready to help. Just don’t ask him to get involved.

Jessie Connolly spent most of her life not being liked by a good part of Bluff Point, Maine.  People were quick enough to cozy up to her for her money, but not much else.  So when Seth Connolly swept her off her feet and asked her to pick him up from the church on the day of his wedding to Mackenzie (Mac) Harris, she was flattered.  After all, Seth had chosen her over Mackenzie, the woman he had planned to marry.  But life with Seth wasn’t happy, not by any means.  When she had enough Jessie walked away.  Now she’s doing her best to give her daughters a stable and happy home and rebuild her life.  She is delightfully surprised when Mac and her Maine crew accept her into their midst.  Jessie is more than aware of Zack’s reputation, but she doesn’t quite know what to do with the man he really is.  When she and the girls are snowed in and Zack comes to check on them she quickly finds herself rethinking her handsome, blond-haired hunk of a neighbor.

Both Zack and Jessie have pasts—secrets from their pasts that can’t help but come out as the couple become closer to each other.  Will those secrets and dark stories of their pasts keep them apart or bring them even closer?

I’ve been totally enjoying Jenn McKinlay’s Bluff Point series and I have to say while I thought BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE was the best, McKinlay has outdone herself with her latest, EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY.  I liked Zack when I read his character in earlier books and had a feeling his story was going to be memorable and indeed it was.  McKinlay started developing both his and Jessie’s characters in books 1 and 2 so by time you read their story in book 3, EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY, you feel like you know them and quickly come to root for them and their relationship.  While they fall in love quickly, it’s believable.  There is no rush to put the characters between the sheets, but the reader is teased through the story wanting Jessie and Zack to culminate their relationship.  His care and compassion for Jessie and her girls makes him all the more lovable.

Each book can be read as a standalone because McKinlay individualizes the stories.  There is enough back story into each of the prior couples and secondary characters to catch readers up to their roles in the story.  Jenn McKinlay’s Bluff Point series has quickly become one of my all-time favorites.

THREE HEARTS

Mackenzie (Mac) fled Bluff Point, Maine, seven years ago after being left at the altar on her wedding day.  Heartbroken, she watched he groom take off with one of those women we all knew in high school who most of us didn’t like.  She did find solace though…at least for a short time, in the arms of her best friend, Emma’s brother, Gavin.  It was a night she never forgot…and never intended to repeat because the last thing she wants to do is betray Emma by starting a relationship with her brother.  In the past few years she’s made a life for herself in Chicago—a super job and a boyfriend who doesn’t put too many demands on her.  With Emma’s wedding just around the corner and being the maid of honor, Mac is back in town.  She’s not there long before she finds herself remember just how good things were with Gavin, even if it was only one night.  Despite her best efforts to avoid him or at least a replay of the wedding night that wasn’t, Mac finds herself spending more and more time with Gavin.  She’s also finding herself more and more attracted to him.  And, Gavin is not making things easy for her.  At every turn he lets her know he hasn’t forgotten their one night together and that he wouldn’t mind a repeat – a long term relationship type repeat.  Just when Mac thinks maybe she can make it through Emma’s wedding without succumbing to Gavin’s charms a puppy named Tulip bounces into her life.  It isn’t long before Mac wonders how she can leave Tulip…and Gavin…behind once again.

I’m a long-time fan of Jenn McKinlay’s cozy mysteries with her library lovers series a particular favorite.  Recent books in all her cozy series have had increasing focus on romance rather than on the various sleuths figuring out who done it.  I’m happy McKinlay has branched out and is now writing romance.  When I pick up a mystery I want to read a mystery, not a romance and when I pick up a romance, that’s what I want.  And who can resist a story that features a dog?  Especially a cute little puppy that just melts your heart.  For her first romance McKinlay did a decent job.

Gavin is a hottie.  Plain and simple, you want him for yourself hottie.  Add in the fact that he’s a vet which generally translates into an animal lover, he’s one special kind of guy.  The story on its own was fun…but when Tulip arrives on the scene the story had the added element of being heart-warming.

I’m not sure if it was to up the word count or McKinlay felt it was necessary, but there was some repetition that got a little old after awhile.  I got it after the first fifteen times that Mac felt guilty for getting it on with Emma’s little brother.

I do look forward to not just the next book in the series, but McKinlay’s future writing romance…but please do not leave those cozies behind!

FOUR HEARTS

Much to the chagrin of Mrs. Cole, aka, the Lemon, librarian Lindsey Norris has proclaimed Briar Creek’s first fine amnesty day. As the books pour in they realize some have been missing for quite sometime, including one from twenty years before. Curious, Lindsey asks Mrs. Cole to check out the last person to borrow the book. It give the staff a shock when they realize that the book, Catcher in the Rye, was checked out by the murdered woman, beloved teacher Candice Whitley, on the day she died. Unable to help herself, Lindsey starts digging into the murdered woman’s past and what led up to her murder.  Unrequited love, adoring students and close friends all grieved her loss.  Who would kill such a truly good and kind person?  That’s something Lindsey wants to know.  Along with her friend Robbie Vine and new employee, Paula, Lindsey sets out to find the killer. Can they find him or her before the culprit finds them?

It was great to finally see this series back on track with Jenn McKinlay’s BETTER LATE THA NEVER.  Gone is the annoying love triangle – McKinlay does tie it up and there are a couple of pages dedicated to it – but it is GONE! Hopefully the author will leave it gone (in this and her other three series).

McKinlay also does a fabulous job of using her own library science skills in having Lindsey methodically finding the killer. She knows how to use her resources and if the reader is paying attention, he or she can put those skills to good use…not that I’d advocate getting into crime solving.

I loved the story taking off based on a fine amnesty day.  The way McKinlay takes Lindsey step by step from finding the book and it leading her to the killer, is well done. The end sounds a bit like the series is ending but good news for fans – there is at least one more in the series.
