It’s the year 981 on the Isle of Coruain, and High Chieftain Merrick MacLochlainn knows he has no choice but to do the mission. The witch Eilinora has escaped her incarceration, killed Merrick's father and stolen the scepter of power. He needs to keep the Druzai people safe from the malevolence of their long time enemy and her followers He also need to find Brogan his brother.
The first leg of his quest is to retrieve the sacred stones and bring back power to the Druzai. To obtain the stones Merrick travels forward over eight centuries, to Regency Northumbria in 1826.
On arrival he is mentally confused and cannot recall his past or his mission. He rescues Jenny Keating from some attackers and they travel together for safety. When they reach a Gypsy camp Jenny claims she is his wife. Merrick knows it’s untrue but doesn’t expose her as he wants her safe until his mind heals. As he recovers Merrick falls in love, but also begins to believe Jenny is the source of where he can find the stones. They both know he must go back in time but can she accompany her beloved if they retrieve the stones while his known foe and other death sorcerers cause mayhem?
This is a fascinating romantic fantasy with time travel, witches and lots of excitement. It brings together a Dark Ages Scottish warrior and a Regency woman who has no idea she has any power. The time travel is handled very well and as Merrick struggles with the effect of the trip. The story line is fast-paced from the opening, as Merrick tells his courageous female cousin Ana, he will journey not her. From the attack soon after his arrival, danger in the gypsy camp and the journey to the city, the plot never slows down. Dialogue and conflicts are very realistic within the genre. As Jenny learns about her power, the author allows the reader to almost feel the silver strands she pulls it in with. The search for the stones as the enemy searches and finds them, the plot moves forward well. The settings are well drawn and the temptation of their growing passion is beautifully written. The final confrontation came all too soon for this reader as they use magical power to finally thwart the evil witch.
Fans of Ms. Maguire will appreciate and enjoy this magnificent good vs. evil thriller.
