Alexandra Dumas’s four musketeers are now swashbuckling sleuths in the court of King Louis XIII. When Henri D’Artagnan receives word of his father’s passing he knows he needs to go home to Gascony to see to his inheritance. He doesn’t want to leave the musketeers, but his companions promise to go with him. Along the way they are attacked by highwaymen and it seems they are intent on killing D’Artagnan. This is only the beginning as the attacks on his young life accumulate. Something is seriously wrong when D’Artagnan finds out that his father was killed in a dual. He knows that nobody could best his father. To unravel this crime, the four friends must uncover some surprising revelations in young Henri’s family history.
Fans of the Musketeers will enjoy this tale. Sarah D’Almeida spins an entertaining story around these famous characters and throws them into solving crimes. She has kept each character true to the original story and the reader will be drawn in to the wonderful world of Louis XIII and the intrigues of the wicked Richelieu. The plot keeps the reader turning the pages to see what happens next and as the plot thickens, red herrings abound. Readers will be hard pressed to put this book down. It was nice to revisit the time period, and in particular these fun characters. I noticed that this talented author has written more books about the adventures of the musketeers and I am definitely going to look them up.
