Elizabeth Westbrook has traveled to Colorado Territory to photograph the newly discovered cliff dwellings of the Maroon Bells. Success at this quest will help insure a position as a photographer for a paper back East. She is also hoping the area’s much toted healing powers will help her find a cure for her mysterious illness.
Her life becomes in danger when one of her photographs becomes evidence in a murder case. Can she and former sharpshooter for the Confederation, Daniel Ranslett solve the case before her enemies find her?
I love reading about women who don’t fit in with society’s ideal, such as women doctors or lawyers…or in this case, a woman photographer, in the 1800’s. Author Tamera Alexander most definitely succeeds on this score with FROM A DISTANCE. Elizabeth’s father is a decorated Union commander who barely tolerates his daughter’s “hobby” of photography and would never approve if he discovered that one of the reasons she traveled to Colorado was to help nail a job offer as a photographer. What would all of his society friends and contacts think! Even the people of Colorado are in utter shock that this young white woman would hire a black man as her assistant. What could she be thinking?
The characters in FROM A DISTANCE are well written and incredibly believable. The prose is smooth, never flat, and the intrigue will keep the reader turning the pages. Ms. Alexander’s newest offer is well researched and will give her more success. Don’t miss out on FROM A DISTANCE if you love books of this genre, for it will not disappoint. Elizabeth will make your day a little brighter.
