Lieutenant Colonel Phineas Bromley has been summoned home by his sister, Elizabeth due to the illness of their brother, William. Upon arriving home at Quence Park, he finds his brother in good health but decides to stay at the urging of his sister. Alyse Donnelly lived on a neighboring estate, she and Phin shared some nice moments in the past but life has not been good to her. She is working as a companion to her aunt since the death of her parents. The return of Phin stirs up feelings and memories for Alyse throwing her life into further turmoil.
The romance between Phin and Alyse is sweet and nicely done. Phin and Alyse are well-developed characters. They are fleshed out and feel like real human beings versus caricatures of what the hero/heroine should be. In fact, even William and Elizabeth are fully realized and great additions to the story. The personal interactions among the four characters makes this story comes alive for the reader.
BEFORE THE SCANDAL is a book full of suspense and mystery. Ms. Enoch gives us glimpses and hints about what is going on and she pulls us into the storyline. There are weird happenings at the family home and questions to who, what, why they are occurring is solved by the end of the book.
BEFORE THE SCANDAL is the sequel to After the Kiss. It truly shines when it focuses on Alyse and Phin. At times, it seemed the pacing was slow especially when it dealt with the “mysteries” of what was happening at Quence Park. We don’t know if there will be a third book in this series but we would love to read Bram’s story. He was such an important character in BEFORE THE SCANDAL; he deserves his own book!
