Judith McMonigle Flynn is an innkeeper and is looking forward to a holiday. Her husband Joe has arranged a surprise destination and it’s not until she lands in London and gets on the next plane does she realize that she’s on her way to Scotland to stay in a real castle. Accompanying them is her prickly cousin and her husband. While the men are off fishing with a friend, the women go exploring, then there is an explosion at the castle and someone dies. At once, Judith is on the snoop. Always curious, she starts to collect clues and asks questions. Her cousin is with her, most of the time. But things get stranger when their husbands go missing. Through the bonnie braes and sea-green glens of Scotland, the hunt is on for a killer. Never was a Highland fling so dangerous.

This was a very entertaining story that kept me captivated until the very end. I was hard pressed to have to put the story down and couldn’t wait to get back to it. Mary Daheim has written a very well rounded story. Great characters, very good plot and a gripping mystery. I must say that I almost felt sorry for Judith. Her cousin didn’t always make things so easy. It was also unique for me to read about two older women, with their physical handicaps get into the adventure of solving a murder. Just goes to show, one might be past middle-age, but one isn’t dead! Of course, Judith’s cousin has her own reasons for being so prickly and everything gets sorted out in the end. Now I need to get the rest of the titles in this series and there are quite a few!
