Beautiful Maggie was seen as cursed in her native Scotland as she was the only survivor of a massacre. So when her mentor and teacher died, Maggie signed on as an indentured servant heading to the Colonies. Armed with only her quick wits and her skills as a midwife, she is hoping to make a better life for herself. Once there, Maggie attracts the attention of a dissolute nobleman who wants her as a whore and a frontiersman who wants her for how she makes him feel.
Not my usual read, the blurb on MIDWIFE OF THE BLUE RIDGE by Christie Blevins caught my eye. And boy am I glad that it did. Maggie’s story is one that will wring the reader’s heart. Ms. Blevins did a fabulous job of bringing the characters to life in a time that wasn’t kind to anyone especially women. Life on the frontier wasn’t pretty and it certainly wasn’t easy yet the men and women of this time survived, prospered and loved. I really have to give Ms. Blevins kudos showing us both the hardships and joys of living on the frontier during the 18th century though I have to admit that I did shudder a more than a few times about some of the conditions that were just accepted as normal. Our foremothers were a strong lot and I challenge anyone that feels that women are the weaker sex to say so after reading MIDWIFE OF THE BLUE RIDGE.
I highly recommend MIDWIFE OF THE BLUE RIDGE to any reader who is looking for a thought provoking tale of life on the American frontier. Pick up your copy today and set aside some time to venture backwards in time.
