The three Gallatin sisters, Gwen, Beth, and Lacy, have been left to run their stage coach boarding house in the wilds of Montana by themselves since their father was killed in a shooting accident. Gwen has another recent loss; the death of her new husband just days after their wedding. Now Harvey’s brother has shown up believing she is nothing but a gold digger, and demands the return of valuables that Harvey took when he left their family home back east. Gwen has no idea what valuables Hank is talking about. As a matter of fact, Harvey told her that he didn’t have any family! So just who is the liar….Harvey or Hank?
I found A PROMISE TO BELIEVE IN a touching story on many levels. Gwen has certainly had her share of sadness in her life. She believes she is cursed. And now, just days after she has lost her father she has a mystery to solve. The only thing she has in her life that she can put her trust in is her two sisters and her faith in God.
Author Tracie Peterson is a very gifted story teller. I have read several stories offered by this author and found them to be very enjoyable. However, I felt there was a part of the plot in this story that was left hanging. We have an unsavoury character who the author leads the reader to believe might cause some mischief and mayhem that never comes to pass. Had this been fully explored, this book would have come to a much more satisfactory conclusion.
Also there are parts in the book that this reader felt dragged on a bit. I had to put the book down and come back to it at a later time in order to get through it. Alas, it was unable to hold my interest throughout.
As I have stated previously, Ms Peterson is a very talented author whom I have enjoyed reading in the past and hope to do so again. A PROMISE TO BELIEVE IN just did not live up this reader’s very high expectations of Ms Peterson.
