The first book in suspense writer Jordan Dane’s new Sweet Justice series, EVIL WITHOUT A FACE features Jessica Beckett, a bounty hunter with attitude.
While working a bounty, Jessica finds herself involved in a case of online predators and teenage abduction that hits a little too close to home for Jessica, whose formative years were filled with abuse and evil she was lucky to escape. With the help of her best friend, Detective Samantha Cooper, and her new summer intern Seth, they risk everything in a chase across the country searching for a missing teen and ultimately, the head of the abduction ring.
Jordan Dane is a masterful storyteller. EVIL WITHOUT A FACE is a chilling and fast paced suspense that keeps readers in thrall. This story goes back and forth between the missing teen’s perspective and Jessica’s. This reader could easily recall the frustration, desperation and drama of her teenage years when Nikki’s story begins. By the time Nikki realizes what is happening and the terror of it all sets in, readers feel as if they are watching it all unfold in front of them.
Where Nikki’s terror is happening in the present, Jessica’s terror is all in her past, leaving her emotionally damaged and hardened by life. Luckily, she has Detective Sam and her protégé Seth to soften her character. Jessica is like a dog with a bone. She refuses to give up because she feels a connection with Nikki. And then there is the intrigue surrounding Seth that heightens the drama all the more. He is definitely not what he appears to be, but neither Jessica nor readers know exactly what is going on with him. As we know the series is centered on three female characters, we can only hope that Seth also plays a pivotal role in the other books in the series.
At the story crosses the country and the scope of the criminals turn international, the suspense positively leaps off the page. It is anyone’s guess whether Jessica will find Nikki in time to save her and more importantly, if she will end up instrumental in bringing an end to the evil flesh peddling ring or just tip them off and cause them to relocate.
Abduction, abuse, torture, flesh peddling and worse make Jordan Dane’s EVIL WITHOUT A FACE a standout in the realm of suspense. This book comes highly recommended.
