Mags was a slave working in a gem mine where food and warmth were a luxury in short supply. When he hears of a white horse that had been hanging around the mine, he has no idea of the meaning as he had never heard of Heralds and Companions. Dallen, his Companion, had his hands..err hoofs full teaching Mags about his gifts, the world, friendship and joy. But now not all is right in the world and Mags is the only one that has noticed it.
Mercedes Lackey has returned to the world of Valdemar with a vengeance in FOUNDATION. Taken back to the time when the Herald’s Collegium is just being built, readers are introduced to characters that were mentioned in earlier books as legends. We get to experience firsthand the treachery and turmoil that went into the making of the colleges.
But FOUNDATION is not all about underhanded dealings. We also get to meet Mags and watch him grow from a scared boy who doesn’t know anything except how to find gems and survive, to an honorable young man who will do anything to protect his friends and dreams. We also get to meet Dallen, his Companion, who is there to protect his Herald and friend. And let’s not forget all the friends that Mags has made on his journey. These are all characters that will stay with the reader long after the last page has been read.
I highly recommend FOUNDATION to lovers of fantasy and to fans of Valdemar. The world of Valdemar was one of my introductions to fantasy and I rejoiced that Ms. Lackey has returned to this world. And FOUNDATION has to be one of her best! Just one warning to readers: be prepared to be swept away by Ms. Lackey’s magical storytelling.
