Celeste Marsella blends her legal background and love of mysteries in PERFECTLY CRIMINAL, a mystery/thriller filled with plot twists aplenty and four tough as nails female prosecutors.
After a bad day in court, Assistant Prosecutor Shannon Lynch finds herself belly up to a bar with three of her best friends and workmates. After literally picking up a man at the bar, she takes him back to her place where one thing is leading to another, he suddenly breaks down and confesses to murder.
It is just too much of a coincidence and yet Shannon still can’t seem to stay away from the flirtatious Senator Scott Boardman, even though her office is prosecuting him for murdering his wife (and her lesbian girlfriend). Even with her three friends trying to watch out for her, Shannon finds herself at the scene of another murder and finds that the Senator has thrust her into a web of murder, money, politics and secrets that could cost Shannon her job as well as her life.
Celeste Marsella’s PERFECTLY CRIMINAL is perfectly intriguing. Her writing style is sharp, crisp and gritty. Her characters are all tough and determined, slightly flawed and incredibly human. They are, for the most part, single, stressed with high profile jobs and are somewhat morally challenged. The main character, Shannon, is real close to being burnt out by her career. She has been having a long-time affair with a married man and sees nothing wrong with the occasional one-night stand. That Shannon believes the Senator’s innocence at all would be difficult to swallow if not for her cynical personality. The Senator is the stereotypical rich, attractive but oh so crooked politician. These questionable personalities are the perfect setup for a criminal thriller.
The plot line is fast paced and filled with red herrings and plot twists. Celeste Marsella craftily turns the eye of suspicion on one character after another as she weaves what might be the perfect crime. This reader certainly recommends PERFECTLY CRIMINAL to anyone who enjoys a good crime thriller with colorful personalities.
