The seventh and possibly last book in fantasy/horror author Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series, SWALLOWING DARKNESS, brings startling revelations and surprising twists to the world of fairie.

SWALLOWING DARKNESS takes off where A Lick of Frost left off. Princess Merry is finally pregnant with twins but grieving the loss of one of her most beloved guards, Frost. The story begins with Merry recovering after being raped by her Uncle Taranis who claims the twins are his even though they were conceived prior to the rape. Her cousin Cel is once again doing his best to see Merry dead so that he can lay claim to the Unseelie crown. Merry is weary of having her loved ones die in her quest for the crown and when an innocent from Merry’s past is killed, Merry lets her fury run free and calls up the Wild Hunt for vengeance. The ensuing chase brings answers to all those questions that have been plaguing this series since its introduction. Once again, Merry is forced on a dangerous adventure through fairie.

Merry’s duplicitous family is front and center in this book. Her father’s murderer is finally revealed and magic is brought back to fairie when the decision of who finally gets to wear the Unseelie crown is decided. Merry is happily settled with all her lovers and she is back at work. Could this be the end of this fantastical series or is Merry ready to tackle her Uncle and the Seelie court now?

You either love Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry books or you hate them. There really doesn’t seem to be any real middle ground here. For this reader, it doesn’t get much better than a LKH book. Laurell’s creative mind takes readers to places beyond the imagination and brings light to the darkest characters. This reader found SWALLOWING DARKNESS to be perhaps the best book in the Merry Gentry series. The pace was frantic, the characters bigger than life and the revelations aplenty. Though many readers are hoping Ms. Hamilton ends this series on this obvious high note, this reader can’t help but think Ms. Hamilton might just be up to the task of taking this series down another path, perhaps finally uniting the two courts once again?

If you haven’t been following this series, now is not the time to jump in with book 7. Start at the beginning and read, read, read. Laurell K. Hamilton is unsurpassed in the horror/romance/fantasy genre. SWALLOWING DARKNESS and the Merry Gentry series is without question fully deserving of this readers’ highest recommendation.
