Melody Ann Croft is working hard as a waitress, earning money for college. One day a man comes in to eat and seeing her he hands her his card. He is a top photographer and is convinced that Melody is model material and encourages her to call a few agencies. Surprisingly, dropping his name, Melody gets invited to come by for interviews and at the first agency she is immediately signed up. Then starts the whirlwind life of constantly running from one go-see to another, photo-shoots, and eventually the cat-walk. Melody finds a friend, Jade, another model with more experience, who gives Melody many words of wisdom. Not all those beautiful models are so nice in such a competitive world, and not all the men who want to photograph Melody are really after a photograph and not all the male models are really as nice as they seem. Temptation abounds. Melody has to decide to stand up for her morals or throw everything aside and dive into the darker side of the model business.
First of all, I must say that Carol Alt knows what she is writing about. She herself has been a model, a TV and film actress and has made exercise videos. This is her first novel and I enjoyed it. She describes the wild world of models and the rise of a girl from a small town to the heights of a super model. I really enjoyed reading about Melody. She is character who is warm, sweet and somewhat naive. Exactly how you would imagine a small town girl. When she is thrown into this new world, it is interesting to see how she copes. I felt like I was peeking behind a curtain that is usually very tightly closed and I enjoyed what I saw. I believe everything that was written about a model’s life and all the hardships they have to go through. Although the financial rewards may be big, the work is gruelling. If you’d like to peek into this glittering world and enjoy a good story, I can recommend THIS YEAR’S MODEL.
