DAVID’S DILEMMA by Lynn Lorenz was a delightful book. It introduces us to a man struggling to do the right thing with his father. David’s father has Alzheimer’s and is also homophobic. David must almost daily repeat the fact that he is gay to this man and deal with the outburst that follows. On a rare occasion his father seems to actually understand and while not embracing David’s sexuality, at least is tolerant of it. Because of the disease and taking care of his father, David does not date. When his father disappears, David is helped to find him by Detective Travis Hart. Travis is attracted to David and asks him out. But David has to refuse. Instead Travis calls him and they begin a relationship on the phone. Trying to deepen their relationship and deal with David’s father is difficult.
This book touched my heart. Watching David trying to take care of and love his father was engrossing. I really felt for David as he tries to make the decision to have his dad go to a home. I understood his need to delay that for as long as possible. Having watched a good neighbor go through something similar, I felt for him. David struggles with trying to balance taking care of his father and his own needs.
Travis, on the other hand, has been in a relationship which he was used for his money. Throughout the book, he is tempted by his ex but realizes that what he had before was shallow compared to what he feels for David. He wants to help David and yearns to take the burden from him of having to make this decision but has to deal with his ex-lover first. Travis is a perfect foil for David and you can feel these men belong together.
This was a book I enjoyed very much. I love the realistic way that Lynn portrays these two men as well as David’s father. The struggle to try and balance everything, I think everyone can relate to. The ending satisfied my every desire for this wonderful book. I can highly recommend David’s Dilemma.
