Are you a fan of witches? Do you wonder about witch hunters? What would happen if a witch and a hunter met and discovered they were destined mates? This book, COOKING WITH ERGOT by Luisa Prieto takes this premise and turns it on its head with marvelous results.
Dominic is a witch. A kitchen witch who has a cooking show called the Midnight Gourmet with his familiar, Blaise. Who is, in the best tradition of Calvin and Hobbes, a stuffed tiger. Dominic needs someone to play a part for his show and is dismayed to find out that his producer has hired Carter Brooks, a man descended from witch hunters and rumored to be a hunter himself. Based on his books that he writes which are cookbooks filled with ancient hunter lore.
Carter, on the other hand, is a man who thinks that hunters are just fiction along with witches. There is no magic and people don’t kill one another over this. He writes his books with a sarcastic bent to show people how ludicrous it is. Carter is thrilled to be invited to be on Midnight Gourmet. However, Carter has a problem. Someone in his family is killing witches and using him to target them.
When Dominic and Carter meet, sparks fly. Something powerful draws them together and someone wants to rip them apart. Will they be able to overcome everything?
This was a delightful book to read. Filled with magic and desire, it sparkles with wit and charm. The villain is creepy and the situation the two men find themselves in is interesting. I found this to be an easy book to read. It was one that flowed easily and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would enjoy a sequel to this one that might explore how their families deal with everything. And truthfully, I would really enjoy having Blaise in another book. I confess to having a fondness for the stuffed tiger. I’ve given this book a 4.5 rating.
