CLICK TO PURCHASE! Lone by Rowan McBride is not just another paranormal book. Instead it takes us deep in the lives of two men.
Seth has been lone almost all of his life. Not alone, although he has had that as well, but simply lone. There is a distinction. Seth is a man who thinks he has adjusted to his life of lone. He meets Rafe and ends up in a relationship. Seth knows he should leave Rafe but he finds it hard. For the first time Seth doesn’t want to. Knowing what is best and doing it are two different things.
This story took werewolf stories to a whole new level. I ached with Seth as he struggles to understand things. His need for Rafe both saves him and yet is his downfall as well. It brings to mind the cliché…’always darkest before the dawn”. Seth wants to be normal and to have a normal life as a werewolf. The fact that he is one of the Nightkin is hard enough to explain. The rest is nearly impossible. Yet it turns out that Seth has to explain things to Rafe after a trip that they take together. In explaining them he fully expects Rafe to leave him and it breaks his heart. His confusion and longing for Rafe nearly oozes off the page.
Rafe is a strong and loving man. He knows that Seth has some problems, especially with commitment. Rafe believes in Seth though and really thinks that they can get through it. When things come out, Rafe doesn’t know what to think. He is stunned by the knowledge of the Nightkin world and also by what Seth is. Rowan McBride makes you worry and agonize with Rafe as he tries to figure out what to do. You want him to accept Seth but it is so much that is different that you can understand why he shouldn’t.
This story both broke my heart and restored my faith in people. I just ached for Seth. Rowan McBride gives him such depth and never varies from what he is like, to the degree that it is almost painful to read his character and yet you can’t stop. Rafe is the perfect counterpoint to Seth. I cannot praise this book enough. Even if you don’t like werewolf stories, you will like this one. For those of us who do like werewolf stories, allow me to say that you will be stunned by this one. It is a totally unexpected gem of a story. I give this book a rating of 5.
