Lady Philippa Gossett, she longs for the one man who stole her kisses and her heart. Playing her body like a master, she never forgot the pirate captain who made her heart beat and her body melt with his touch. Those memories are best left alone or so Philippa thought until a chance encounter has her seeking the one man she never forgot: Captain Thomas Dashwell. Can she tempt Dash back from the edge with memories and that scandalous red dress that caused so much trouble way back when?

I have never read the other books in this series and found MEMOIRS of A SCANDOULOUS RED DRESS to be a bit confusing. I really enjoy lovers who find their way back to each other a few years later but this book had me very confused. There were lots of characters mentioned that had me wondering if I should get a score card to keep track of them all and the plot was a bit pushed, to my thinking. It was a struggle to even understand why these two should even be together in the first place. I normally enjoy Ms. Boyle’s work but this had to be one of her least enjoyable books I have read.

The main characters were a bit more mature, have experienced life and had families and have experienced tragedy as well. These tried to give them a bit of a vulnerable edge but frankly I wished both characters, Dash and Philippa, could just get a life. It was hard to feel for them even as Philippa dealt with the realization that while she was succumbing to Dash’s seduction he was wooing another woman in the process in America. To me, that made Dash very unappealing. I like flawed characters but it seems Ms. Boyle made Dash just a tad too unlikable in my opinion. The tone of the book was almost bordering on boredom and darkness. I had a hard time finishing this one and had to force myself to finish it.

I may read the others in this series to see if those books may be better than MEMOIRS OF A SCANDOULOUS RED DRESS. I hope that Ms. Boyle’s next one lives up to her writing style since this one was not her best. If you enjoy a historical romance about long lost lovers, then I hope you enjoy MEMOIRS OF A SCANDOULOUS RED DRESS.
