Jonas Tallent, Lucifer Cynster’s brother-in-law has grown bored with the ballrooms of London and the arms of the many lovers he has had. He returns to Devon to manage his family’s estate while his father is away. He finds he enjoys the work and feels some satisfaction in what he does. Unfortunately, the manager of the inn passes away and he is in dire need of a new one. Determined to find the best, he takes it upon himself to hire the man. Is he in for a surprise when Emily Beauregard turns up on his doorstep and applies for the job. Emily is desperate for the job. She has siblings to take care of and she’s looking for her family’s treasure that is supposed to be hidden in the small village. As she gets closer to finding the treasure, danger rears its head and threatens her happiness. For Emily has found the greatest treasure of all in the arms of Jonas.

I have gotten somewhat behind on the Cynster novels and was very happy to receive this one to review. I’ve realized that I had missed the Cynster family a lot and now I need to catch up. Stephanie Laurens has a wonderful way of writing a story that draws you in and keeps you captive. She writes wonderful characters. Jonas is very determined to find out why Emily has come to the village and equally determined to woo and win her. Emily is steadfast, strong and also very determined not to succumb to Jonas’ advances...but to no avail. Ms. Laurens writes a very sensual, passionate romance story and adds some mystery too. I especially enjoyed their first meeting, when at the end, Jonas was happy that Emily hadn’t smiled at the beginning of their talk. For when she smiled, his brains scrambled! I know that Ms. Laurens fans will devour this story and all historical fans will love it too. Personally, I have been a long time fan of this talented author.
