Darcy Abriel’s CRUEL MEMORIES is a dark and emotional story of healing and new beginnings.

With Gavin dead, Haley has returned to Falcon Hill to claim her husband. For ten years Devon covered up for his brother’s dark soul and the damage he inflicted. Now Haley has to find a way to get Devon to let the past go and start living their life together.

At just under seventy-five pages, Darcy Abriel’s CRUEL MEMORIES is a very quick read. The story is dark and emotional. Haley is a strong woman who has managed to get past the emotional damage Gavin did to her. Devon, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to get past it. He has been forced to sweep up after his disturbed brother again and again. And even with Gavin’s death, Devon can’t seem to get on with his life.

The premise for the book is good. The myriad of emotions is easily felt for both the lead characters. However, the book is so short that there just wasn’t enough build up for this reader. Perhaps, if the book started with Haley’s rape and ended with this story of the aftermath, this reader would have felt more of a connection. The difficult road back for both characters should have been the story. Instead, Ms. Abriel delivered what appeared to be the last chapter of a much longer, more in depth story. For this reader, it was a disappointment.

CRUEL MEMORIES is a fast, but emotion-packed romance best suited for those who want to sample Darcy Abriel’s writing style and not for those looking for a book to get lost in for a few hours. The story is simply too short for that.
