Sue Bookman is a foster parent and she would love to be able to say that she thinks that Rick Kraynick is the best parent for his niece Carrie, but she just isn’t sure that is true. She fears he might be looking for a replacement child for the one that he tragically lost. Carrie’s grandmother, Rick’s mother wants custody of the baby also. Sue just lost her own grandmother, the one person in Sue’s life who has supported her. Sue knows what it is to have a grandmother’s unconditional love…or she thought she did at least until the will is read.
I was torn while reading this story. Rick truly loves his little niece and wants only the best for her, and he knows the best is NOT his mother. He grew up bouncing between his drug addicted mother and foster homes. How can he trust his mother to raise the baby daughter of his dead teenaged sister, a sister he didn’t even know about? I really connected with this character and sympathized with all that he lost. I wanted to jump into the pages and tell Sue “pick Rick, pick Rick!” But watching Sue struggle with her own demons and still try to be an unbiased judge of what would be best for Carrie made my heart ache for her.
A DAUGHTER’S TRUST is well written and grabbed my attention from the very first page. I felt that while it didn’t have many twists and turns to keep me guessing, it is a poignant story. There is heart-felt devotion on each side, Sue’s, Rick’s, and even Rick’s mother. A DAUGHTER’S TRUST is a great read that will leave the reader satisfied when they turn the very last page.
