Beth has had it with her best friend Jocelyn. After the supposed man of her dreams dumps her, Jocelyn retreats into herself, letting no pleasure or the light that was Jocelyn out again. In order to get the “old” Jocelyn back, Beth takes her to a special surprise party where Jocelyn finds herself reawakened to the pleasure and pain of BDSM.

SURPRISE PARTY is a short little novella that will tease the senses and keep your body humming while reading it. Ms. Kristensen delves into a world of BDSM and the pleasure/pain a person may experience. I was intrigued by the title and the way the two friends interacted with the other but the one complaint I found was it was too short and the characters not fleshed out more. I would have loved to have known more about the life Jocelyn was getting into at the end of the book or what Beth’s life was even like there. It was hard for me to get much of a response towards the end of the book when Jocelyn met the Master showing her around the party. Who was he, what did he want from her- those questions kept arising as I read SURPRISE PARTY and left me a bit disappointed that there was nothing more to enjoy or learn about.

Meet Jocelyn, a woman who thought she had the perfect man in her life until he left her, spirit and soul crushed and her faith in herself lost. Enter in her best friend Beth, who thinks the “Old” Jocelyn is in there, just buried under the pain and heartbreak. Beth takes Jocelyn out to a party, a very special one, unlike one Jocelyn has ever been to before. Can Beth get Jocelyn back to where she was before the jerk hurt her? Ok, I have to admit, Jocelyn was a nice character in the beginning but I had a tough time understanding why she kept getting angry then switching course and capitulating to Beth’s desires. Beth seemed a little too forceful sometimes and though she meant well, I just could not get that “a-ha” moment that had me sympathizing with Jocelyn’s plight. I wished the characters had a bit more depth to them and that spark that has a reader shaking their head and sympathizing with them but for myself, this fell a bit flat for my tastes.

If you enjoy a highly erotic story with some BDSM, F/F scenes and other aspects of this lifestyle and you don’t have much time to read a longer book, SURPRISE PARTY may intrigue you on that lunch break.
