Hap and Leonard are more like brothers than friends. Hap is white and heterosexual; Leonard is black and gaily gay. They have a sense of humor that is politically incorrect and take great pride in being big, tough boys. One day, Leonard shows up on Hap’s door with his friend Marvin Hanson. Marvin wants the boys to go and rescue his granddaughter from the clutches of some small-time drug dealers. Shouldn’t be a problem. But, once they take care of the problem, in the only way they know, they find out that the drug dealers have connections to the Dixie Mafia who are more than put out at Hap and Leonard’s disrespect. Soon, Hap and Leonard are being chased, being shot at and they have a professional killer by the name of Vanilla Ride after them. If they can survive all this, they could survive anything.
When I picked this book up, I just couldn’t put it down. This is one ride you will not want to miss. Hap and Leonard are two of the funniest characters I have met in a long time. They banter back and forth and had me laughing out loud. Joe R. Lansdale is a master at dialogue and a master at creating characters you will just adore. This story reminded me a bit of the Lethal Weapon films, and it certainly played before my eyes as I read it. We not only have some kick-ass story telling here but a lot of kick-ass action too. Through all the action, killing and lewd jokes, this talented author shows us the way humans are. The dark secrets, the proud times and things like race, friendship and love. This is one story I will treasure, savor and definitely read again. I will have to pick up any other titles where these two scruffy crime busters have their adventures. Absolutely brilliant!
