Since her father’s death, Mary Barnes is suffering under her step-mothers thumb, she is little more than an employee. And the situation doesn’t get better when with Jordan Winthrop, future Earl of Sunderland, a possible suitor for her step-sister arrives.
Jordan is the personified rake and scoundrel, who has to marry a rich heiress, because he was disinherited by his father. Felicity seems to be the perfect solution for his plans, till he encounters Mary. But Mary doesn’t want to have anything to do with Jordan, because she plans to marry the safe but oh so boring neighbour. To speed up her plans she buys a love potion, but when she uses it, Jordan’s interest in her suddenly starts to grow. Now her whole life starts to turn upside down.
The Cinderella story in a Regency setting, that’s what PROMISE OF PLEASURE is. But it isn’t just a re-telling of the well know fairy tale, but Ms. Holt gives it a nice little twist. Jordan isn’t the perfect Prince Charming and one of the step-sisters isn’t as evil and wicked like in the fairy tale.
Jordan and Mary are two strong characters, although Mary is sometimes really a little bit naïve. But somehow is it cute and made me smile while reading the book. Altogether, Ms. Holt put together an interesting and very unusual cast of characters together. It’s so much fun to read the book
PROMISE OF PLEASURE is the first book in the Spinster’s cure trilogy. The second book Taste of Temptation will be released in June 2010 and the last one, Dreams of Desire will be released in December 2010.
