Something is wrong in the Congo. Animals and humans are dying from something no one can find. Thinking its Ebola, the CDC sends in Dr. Rikki Kinn to investigate. But she doesn’t anticipate the danger that surrounds her every move or the fact that the agent from Dirk & Steels, Amiri, is there to protect her even as her feelings grow for the mysterious shape shifter.

Amiri never wanted to see the land of his birth again after being kidnapped and forced to be in awful experiments by the Consortium. This aspect of his life leaves its mark on his very soul even as he struggles with the nightmares from that time. Now his friends in the agency want him to face those nightmares as he protects the intriguing doctor. Someone doesn’t want Rikki or Amiri to find out what is happening and they will do anything they can to stop them…even murder. Can these two find a way to stop the plague ravaging the land while they struggle to stay alive in the process?

THE LAST TWILIGHT is an action packed ride from the moment you open the book. Lush setting, mystery and a romance that won’t be denied, it is pure perfection in my eyes as I was drawn into the land of Africa. I want to mention this is a dark story with lots of violence at times. It may not appeal to everyone due to that content. Ms. Liu is a wonderful weaver of tales. With lush settings, captivating characters and a fast paced storyline, this is truly one gem of a story you won’t want to put down.

Meet Amiri. He is a cheetah shape shifter and in his early years, loved running in his home land of Africa. That is until the Consortium kidnapped him and then for years, had him in awful experiments. He survived to join the Dirk and Steele agency determined to never return to the one place that haunts him to this day. That is until he is assigned a case in Africa and to the lovely doctor. Now Amiri has to deal with his demons as he tries to protect the one woman who is becoming more than just a job to him. Amiri is a hero with scars inside and out. I loved that he was complex, mysterious and tortured. A tortured hero is the best character in my mind. He was one character I wanted to know more of and I wasn’t disappointed in THE LAST TWILIGHT at all.

Dr. Rikki Kinn is the best virus hunter in the world. Sent by the CDC to find out what is killing people and animals alike, she finds danger at every corner and it doesn’t help she finds her protector, Amiri, just as intriguing as the virus she is trying to identify. I loved the way Rikki and Amiri fit together. Both are wounded souls and have secrets they carry deep inside them. I loved how the author made these two very believable and quite enjoyable as well. Both main characters have vulnerabilities that come out along the story as well as a core of steel inside. Both had rough lives yet Rikki and Amiri find strength to meet each day. The connection is soul deep for these two and that is what captivated me because you could literally see the sparks fly when they first meet.

THE LAST TWILIGHT is one thrill ride after another as you race alongside Amiri and Rikki as they try to outwit the dangerous Broker and his gang of thugs. The author does such a great job in creating her bad guys that I was intrigued by them just as much as I was with the main characters. There were a few secondary characters that left an impression on me and I am eagerly awaiting word if they will have a book of their own in the future.

If you are looking for an engrossing tale set in the lush background of Africa, then please drop everything and grab THE LAST TWILIGHT. I can’t wait to see what else this author dreams up in this enigmatic series.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
