Kit Frazier returns to England after everyone thought he was long dead. He had been captured by pirates seven years before and had become a slave. Coming back to England was painful in many ways. Still when he meets Maddy, he finds a woman who can calm him and keep his monster at bay. But he cannot put Maddy in danger and although he hungers for her, he will not marry her.
Maddy is trying to escape her lot in life. Taken in by her Uncle, she takes care of the household and is part sister, part mother to his daughter Rose. But her Uncle wants to have her as his mistress when Rose marries and leaves the house. She doesn’t know that her Uncle has set things in motion so that no man would ever ask for her. Kit intrigues her, fascinates her and she would rather be his mistress than be turned out on the streets.
This is first of all a very explosive, emotional story. We have Kit, who battles with monsters within, nightmares and the feelings of not being quite a man. Maddy on the other hand is very practical, kind and determined. Ms Lee brings these two unlikely lovers together and they are surely a match for each other. Sometimes I wanted to hit Kit over the head when he was trying to find excuses not to marry Maddy. Still, this is an engrossing story with lots of interesting secondary characters who give the story life and depth. Ms. Lee certainly takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster and I must admit that there was a tear in my eye at the end of the story. The only thing that spoiled this story for me was that it was rather predictable and there were no real surprises. I am sure that Ms Lee’s fans will enjoy this and lovers of historical romances will enjoy it too.
This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
