Katrina Sinclair is a widow who is trying to make a living as a modiste in Regency London. Her designs are clever but she can’t afford to rent a shop in the part of town where ladies will visit her. Her childhood friend Julia, now a marchioness, lets her design clothes for a week-long house party. This is exactly the opportunity Katrina needs to attract more customers.
Then everything starts going wrong. Julia can’t attend the party and insists Katrina go in her place. And it seems Julia hasn’t been completely truthful about none of the people attending the house party knowing her very well. Not to mention Katrina’s own past coming back to torment her.
Leo Kincaid’s bother has sent him to the house party to track a criminal who steals jewels and sells them to fund Napoleon’s war coffers against Britain. He instantly knows this woman is not Julia. But is she a jewel thief? And why is she carrying out this dangerous subterfuge?
Katrina and Leo are wonderfully well-drawn characters that make the novel into a real page turner. Julia is a very complicated character we alternately love and hate, but by the end of the book we understand and appreciate her. Many of the minor characters are also well crafted and make the reader’s emotions run high.
The plot is well-developed and with sufficient twists, turns and surprises to keep the reader entranced. There was one minor plot hole, but since I read an advance copy it may be fixed before the book releases.
A lovely story that is sure to appeal to lovers of this historical era.
This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
