Nalini Singh’s latest psy-changeling book, HEART OF OBSIDIAN, may just be the most anticipated book of the summer.

HEART OF OBSIDIAN is the book where readers finally get the answers they have been looking for.  Although it isn’t necessary to read all the prior books in this series, reading at least a few of them will greatly increase the satisfaction gained from the many reveals in this book.  This is Kaleb’s story.  Up until this book, Kaleb has only played small parts in the stories.  But it was obvious he would someday play a far greater role in the overall story.  Now is that time.

Kaleb is a former Psy Counselor of incredible psychic strength.  He was raised essentially by a deranged serial killer masquerading as a Counselor (a leader of the Psy race).  The glimpses readers have been given of him throughout this series have made him out to be a sneaky, manipulative and icy cold person with a very definite agenda, as yet unknown.  In HEART OF OBSIDIAN, we learn of his developing years and of the woman he has been searching for all these long years.  Now that he has finally found her, the time of reckoning has come.  While that story is playing out, Kaleb is also a major player in the downfall of Silence (closing one’s self off from all emotion in order to remain sane while honing a psychic gift).  While the concept of Silence may have saved the Psy race many years ago, it has become corrupt and must be destroyed to save the Psy now, though not everyone believes destroying it is the answer.

HEART OF OBSIDIAN was, in this reader’s opinion, by far the best book in Nalini Singh’s psy-changeling series.   This book reveals past traumas, enduring loves and is a tale of rebirth.  We see a whole new side to Kaleb in this story.  This Kaleb is a generous lover who has searched years for his long lost love.  Now he wants vengeance for her suffering and we just know he is going to get it.  At the same time, Kaleb is psychically holding together the Psy’s psychic net, or lifeline, and is aware of its rapid disintegration as not too many are.  His actions could either save or destroy the entire Psy race.

His heroine had been raised in a loving family until she was torn from Kaleb’s side as a young girl.  Now she needs Kaleb to help her come back from the place in her head that she has gone to in order to hide from her torturer and she isn’t all that sure she can return.  It is just as obvious that her love is what has saved Kaleb from the dark side.  The gentle and loving scenes between these two characters are beyond moving.  The secondary story of what is happening to the psychic net and the rest of the Psy is intertwined throughout the story to pull the series together beautifully.

HEART OF OBSIDIAN really delivers.  This is one terrific story and definitely worth the price of the book.  For fans of this series, this is the one you have patiently waited for.
