Dariel was supposed to be watching out for his sister yet she dies an accidental death. He can’t forgive himself or get his life back on track, so he spends a lot of time in the cemetery sitting by her grave. Where he meets a ghost named Zach.

This is a very different ghost/horror MM story that pushes a lot of boundaries, and makes the reader think. However the ending is both suitably dramatic, and scary, yet delivers the required satisfactory twist.

I was intrigued by the author’s ability to say something that might be expected to make a reader go “Ewww!”, yet instead of that, I was saying “Oh, okay, I hadn’t thought of that.” Ms. Townsend definitely thinks outside the box and has blended the ghost story/horror story genres very successfully.

This is a very short book, so the scenery and background is just sketched in, but it’s enough to set the story in place and enable the reader to picture where the events occur. The very few other characters likewise are just sketches, but each plays their part and moves the story along. I did like the cemetery cat, Marley. Marley was a very recognizable cat persona and one cat lovers and cat dislikers will both relate to immediately.

There were a few messy sentences, but nonetheless, it’s an excellent short read. Try it under the blanket when you’re home alone one dark night.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
