Kis arrives back in Columbus after a messy breakup with a man he thought he loved. He’s hiding from Declan, who abused him, and who turned out to be a vampire. He meets up with an old school friend and immediately they really connect. Unfortunately Declan wants Kis back and members of his estranged family are looking for him too.

Kis is a fascinating character, a young man with layers and depths to him, and also with a quirky sense of humor. There are some wonderful one-liners and smart-ass laugh-out-loud responses in this short story. His best friend Julius is also a great character, an excellent foil for Kis. For such a short story there are quite a few minor characters, more than I expected, each described with a very short outline but still real and believable. The plot flows fast with action and description in a good mix. The story maintains a fast pace through both dialogue and action. There is no sex in the book, although it is clearly a male/male relationship and the beginning of something special.

This is a well written and engaging story, with surprises that are an integral part of the characters and plot, not just added for effect. This is a book that flows well and engages the reader at all times. A fun read. I continue to be impressed with the quality of Ms. Dalton’s books.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
