Mercenaries, secrets and deception are all intricately interwoven into Stephanie Tyler’s second Section Eight book, UNBREAKABLE, a romantic suspense that starts off running and just keeps coming.

Section Eight consists of mostly ex-government operatives who have teamed up to work black ops missions.  This time, it is one of their own who needs help.  Gunner was an assassin before joining Section Eight.  He grew up the son of double agents, initiated early on into the world of espionage when he was forced to work for international smuggler Drew Landon.  When his past catches up with him, he closes up his tattoo parlor and disappears, leaving behind Avery and what might have been his one chance at love.

Avery is one tough lady, a skip chaser that has no intention of allowing Gunner to simply disappear.  Their attraction was simply too intense.  When she realizes he has disappeared back to his prior life, she and Section Eight concoct a plan to fake his death and take him off the bad guys’ radar.  But when Avery catches up to Gunner, he is a changed man; harder and more desperate.  It may be too late for Avery to save Gunner.

Much of the world building and character development happens in the first book in this series, Surrender.  Although it would be helpful to read the books in order, this reader managed to figure out most of what wasn’t said just fine for the most part.

The main characters, Avery and Gunner, are both strong, able and stoic (read stubborn here).  When Avery ends up being tortured by the man Gunner has gone back to, Section Eight pulls together to find a way to stop this powerful villain.  The action then really picks up, the suspense ratchets and surprising twists and turns ensue.  And while the story has a satisfying conclusion, questions still remain, leaving the door open for the next book in this series.

Lastly, the cover of UNBREAKABLE is extremely eye catching.  This reader knows she shouldn’t pick a book by its cover, but if the cover looks that good, I’m human, I will read it.

Fans of strong characters, hot mercenaries, danger and adventure (not to mention a truly inspiring book cover) are sure to enjoy Stephanie Tyler’s UNBREAKABLE.  It is safe to guess that the other stories in this series will also be equally entertaining.
