El is extremely dedicated to her work at the Agency and is one of their most successful and professional agents. Chelsea and David (“The Agency” book 6: “Unearthed Treasure”) had rounded up the bad guys, but the Cezanne painting has not yet been found. El tracks down her ex-lover, a thief named James, to help them work out how to locate the painting. The relationship between El and James is layered, complicated, and provides them both with many challenges. As does the search for the painting.

Each book in this series is a complete romantic suspense story that can be read as a standalone, but to really appreciate the saga it’s much better to follow the series from the beginning, learning each couple’s stories along the way. Sometimes previous characters make a brief cameo reappearance, but sometimes it’s just that the dialogue simply has more depth with an understanding of what’s happened before.
I liked both El and James. She’s a serious, dedicated professional, but James is a mighty fine distraction. Together they’re an unbeatable team in the search for the painting and in the bedroom. There’s enough layers and complications to keep the reader turning the page as the mission and the personalities ebb and flow, interacting with each other and pulling strands from here and there as the plot is woven together. Ms. Lapthorne has a balanced touch in her writing, mingling romance, steamy sex, dialogue, humor, and danger together into a compelling whole.
Ms. Lapthorne is also one of the very few authors who has been writing erotic romance for over twelve years now, almost since the very start of the genre. That alone is a testament to the high quality of her stories.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
