Laird Niall MacLean handfasted with Ermina Bruce to prevent her being married to a much older man. They’d grown up together and understood each other. Now that brief time together has left her pregnant and everyone knows she’s about to die in childbirth.

This book begins well with plenty of interesting facts for the reader to learn about Niall’s past history and his life now, all of which help the reader understand what drives him. Ermina is a determined woman but determination alone won’t be enough to solve all the difficulties ahead of her, not least of which is that she loves Niall.
This is a mainstream romance so the sex is off-stage, which, combined with the fact that it’s historical fiction, makes it more challenging to demonstrate the emotions of the characters. Ms. Troche manages to show their developing situation well, though. The characters are fully three dimensional and the reader relates to them and their situations. There are a couple of wonderful lines of dialogue and thought processes.
Unfortunately there were quite a few grammatical errors and misused words. “after the door had shit” and “Her eyes had changed from green and darkened to a glowing yellow twinge” had me laughing for all the wrong reasons.

The book has a really nice cover. Kudos to Dawné Dominique for that.
Overall, an interesting story that sets the characters firmly in their historical period, and makes them totally believable and endearing.

This is an objective review and not an endorsement of this book.
