For Cole Barrett, Christmas can just move on by. He has too much to do to bother with the all the trappings that make up the holiday. Between trying to help his two grieving children to getting his ranch out of the hole, Cole is spread as thin as can be and he knows it isn’t the time for celebrating anything, not after everything that has happened in a short period of time. But Cole never anticipated Doctor Devin Shaw to blow into his world and leave him turned upside down. Her compassion for others and empathy for Cole and his kids leave him reeling but there are secrets lurking behind Devin’s eyes and if Cole wants to figure them out, he will have to let his battered heart open to a love that can heal all wounds.

I just love RaeAnne Thayne’s books and her latest addition into the Haven Point series, EVERGREEN SPRINGS, is a perfect story to read on a cool autumn night. Full of small town charm, exceptionally written characters and a storyline that weaves a spell around you, this newest book will charm you as it steals your heart. I love the dynamics between the characters the most. The scenes with prickly Jazmyn and Devin was fun to read as I remember well how prickly a pre-teen can get as well as the scenes with the residents of Haven Point. You get a sense of this community that takes care of one another, regardless of the person’s circumstances. The writing was smooth and this is an author who knows how to let her characters take center stage and run with the story.

Meet Devin and Cole. Two people who are complete opposites in all ways but they do say opposites attract. Devin is a cancer survivor and loves being a doctor. She is compassionate, sweet and determined all rolled into this feisty package. Cole is, in his words, not good to anyone, especially Devin. He is an ex-con trying to help his children work through the grief of losing their mom plus trying to gets his ranch moving forward takes up a lot of his time. But as these two find out, sometimes what they want is not what they deserve. I love, love, love these two together. Devin is optimistic and passionate about helping people. She is a perfect foil to Cole’s outward ‘I am not good for you’ attitude. She brings lightness to Cole and his family that they so desperately need and it will take everything Devin has to show Cole that he can move forward and onto a life that has meaning and joy instead of grief and anger. The author does a marvelous job in capturing the characters quirks and flaws. There were times I wanted to smack Cole for being so morose and miserable and other times I seriously wanted to tell Devin to quit the Pollyanna act but overall these were just a piece of the complete person and made them more life-like and enjoyable. Ms. Thayne delves into a story where the characters take center stage and each time I pick up one of her books, I know I will find some new friends (or old ones at that) to fall in love with. We meet some old familiar faces from past books and a few new ones as well. I love how the author focuses on the small town and its residents rather than an anonymous couple with no real ties to the community. That is the core of what this author is in my opinion. She focuses on the people who make up small towns and gives them a rich and vibrant background to shine in.

EVERGREEN SPRINGS is a sweet, delectable story that had me grinning at times, wiping a few tears and cheering as Cole and Devin find their way to one another. If you enjoy small town romance set amid the splendor of Christmas holidays, than you will enjoy this newest book from a premier storyteller. You don’t have to read books one (Snow Angel Cove) or book two (Redemption Bay) in order to follow the third book as it stands alone but I highly recommend you do just to be introduced to the town and its residents who pop up in all three books. I look forward to the next installment to the Haven Point series and hope her readers won’t have to wait a long time to be swept away to Haven’s Point again.
