Grace King has done pretty well establishing her pet and house
sitting business. So much so that the
Lee’s have asked her to sit for their pet dachshund and house over the
Christmas holidays. Snooze, the dog, has
definite ideas about what he’ll do and when he’ll do it and in the middle of a
snow storm takes off running.
Frantically looking for the pup she runs into her sister Beth’s
ex-boyfriend John Michael. What she never
told anyone was that she had a massive crush on John Michael. But, of course, she would never have done
anything to hurt Beth by flirting with John Michael, not even after he and Beth
broke up. While he helps her locate
Snooze Grace realizes that the handsome firefighter is as attractive as ever and
she is drawn to him more than before.
When John Michael broke things off with Beth it was because he
knew he would never love her the way a husband loves a wife. He knew his affections were really for Grace,
but what can you do when everyone expects you to marry a different sister?
When several fires are started in the area coupled with burglaries
happening at the same time, the distance Grace and John Michael are trying to
keep from each other becomes a secondary concern.
Gray creates true to life characters with situations that we all
might face or know someone who does.
Having two sisters in love with the same man is one such situation. Gray handles the situation with compassion along
with a touch of humor with Snooze the dog’s role in the story. She also delves into how communities need to
step up to take care of the elderly in their area. My first thought was that we should all be fortunate
to have a friend like Grace followed by we should all be more like Grace.
John Michael as well is the kind of guy I wouldn’t mind having
in my life.
I grew up where we had snow storm and dogs that sometimes
decided they wanted a bit of an adventure for themselves. When Snooze took off in
the snow I had a few good memories of similar situations.
While Gray’s books have some suspense they are relaxing reads that
are perfect to read on a rainy day at home.
I enjoyed Shelley Shepard Gray’s latest entry into Hart County
series. In reading her note to readers
at the end I got the impression this is the last book in the series. If that is so, I’m sad…but given her back
list I have no doubt she’ll be back with another series before too long. At least I hope so.
This is an objective review and not an endorsement of
this book.
