Lady Isabel Chalsey catches Sullivan James Waring in the process of robbing her home. They share a heart-stopping kiss and he leaves behind the mask he was wearing. Sullivan is the illegitimate son of the Marquis of Dunston. When his mother passed away, his father claimed all of his mothers’ things including her paintings. Sullivan is determined to get all the paintings back even if it means he must steal them. Isabel recognizes Sullivan when she sees him again as she accompanies her brother to purchase a horse.

Isabel is a feisty and strong woman who finds herself falling in love with a complex man. Sullivan is a man torn: by his desire for Isabel, to get back at his father, his own feelings of inadequacy and to preserve his mother’s legacy. Isabel and Sullivan make a lovely couple but they are beset by problems, mostly Sullivan’s emotional baggage. It was wrenching to watch this couple tackle their problems and we were kept on the edge waiting to see if they could solve them. The author does a fabulous job of bringing these characters alive. You can feel their pain, anguish and ultimately, their joy.

AFTER THE KISS: THE NOTORIOUS GENTLEMEN is the first book in this new series. It is a lively story that will draw the reader into Isabel and Sullivan’s world. There are many secondary characters that elicited my interest: Bram, Sullivan’s best friend as well as Oliver, Sullivan’s half-brother. I would love to know what happened to these two characters as they played such a big role in this story. Before the Scandal is the title of the next book and it features Phineas Bromley. If it is anything like AFTER THE KISS, it is a book to look forward to.
