Marianne Phillips has been kidnapped by a band of mestizos who her father has been trying run off of their own land. They are hoping to trade Marianne for the promise that Phillips will let them live on the land where they have been for a long time in peace.
It wasn’t Armando Garcia’s idea to kidnap the Phillips girl. As a matter of fact, he thinks it was a huge mistake. That is why he agrees to let her go. But not before an attraction flares up between them and Marianne becomes sympathetic to their cause. But how can they follow their hearts when their worlds are so different and when their families see each other as enemies?
Set in nineteenth century Texas, AWAKEN MY HEART gives a fictional view of the troubles and land wars between American landowners, and mestizos who have long owned the land. This reviewer isn’t familiar with the history of this place in time, but can see where this story could be based on fact and is totally believable.
Marianne doesn’t agree with her father in most things, but was brought up to be respectful and trust in God and His plan for her. This reviewer can respect her for her convictions and faith. However, a part of me would have liked to see her stand up to the old man more and without so much regret. Armando is such a man. He stands up for what he believes in. And what he believes in is fairness to his people and their desire to stay in their homes, but not at the cost of an innocent young woman’s life. This reviewer had respect for him for his choice to take her back to her home; a totally unexpected turn of events.
AWAKEN MY HEART starts out with a bang and after a brief lull in the action in which I had to struggle through, it picked back up again and came to a rousing conclusion; one this reader didn’t foresee, which is wonderful, but one I can’t say was totally satisfying. But isn’t that how real life works? By the way, what is a mestizo anyway?
