Caleb’s father has forbidden Caleb from courting Nellie Fisher because of her family’s pulling away from the Old Order. He can not change his love for Nellie, but to continue their relationship means he will lose everything.

Nellie is having a hard time. She misses Caleb and their fleeting and secretive meetings are too far in between. Now she is feeling the pull of the New Order church that her family has been going to. Soon she will have to make a choice; the love she can’t live without, or following her heart into her new faith.

I absolutely loved this book. There are many endearing characters to fall in love with, and a few to gleefully dislike. Caleb’s father falls squarely into the latter category. He is so controlling of his family to the point that if they do not do as he wishes, he will literally kick them out of their home and take away their birthright. This reviewer was pleasantly pleased to see Caleb at least attempt to follow his heart, even though it was in secret.

Nellie is a young woman who knows where her heart is. It is with Caleb. And she is determined to do whatever it takes to make sure they have a future together. Readers will go through heartbreaking moments and struggles of faith and love with Nellie as she discovers what is truly important to her.

Ms Lewis is a gifted author who has penned a delightful and insightful series. I read the first book, The Parting where we first meet Nellie and Caleb. THE FORBIDDEN can be a stand-alone read, but it will make more sense to the reader if they read the first book in the series.

If you like Ms Lewis’ work, don’t miss out on this one. You won’t be disappointed.
