When you put a sexy mercenary together with a virgin hiding a wild side, it is inevitable that eventually they will reach the POINT OF COMBUSTION.
Mia Kerstin comes from a conservative Asian family with very traditional values and a strict view of proper behavior for unmarried young women. She is forced to hide her wild side for fear of shaming her family. When her best friend’s apartment building is fire bombed, Mia unknowingly becomes a target for a madman. Thankfully, her friend’s new husband reaches out to his ex-military buddy Trace Kocourek to guard the tempting Asian beauty and after her life is threatened, Mia finds herself reaching a POINT OF COMBUSTION staying in such close quarters with oh so virile Trace. Mia no longer has to search for adventure. It has found her and has her panting.
Dawn Ryder can always be relied on for a story strong in sexual chemistry and adventure and as the title suggests, POINT OF COMBUSTION most definitely has both. The romance between Mia and Trace is explosive from the very beginning when he comes to her rescue and ensconces her in his well-fortified home/nightclub. The heat level is constantly rising as Mia’s lack of sexual experience becomes a complete turn on for the hardened by life and cautious of love mercenary that has been tasked with guarding her.
That said, the rest of the storyline falls short of delivering. This reader kept expecting the threat to Mia’s life to become more and more serious, but with the exception of a very short scene at the end of the book, it just never happened. The great majority of the book was devoted to one hot sexual episode after another as the two main characters slowly fall in love.
The other thing this reader had a problem with was the coarse language used in the book. Although the dirty talk in the dialog fit the scenes, this same vulgar language used when describing character thoughts had the same effect as a very cold shower for this reader. One would hope that before this book comes out in anything other than e-book format, a more experienced editor would nudge the author to tone down the language in non-dialog areas. Sensual is good, vulgar is not.
Should Ms. Ryder decide to rewrite this book and give the actual storyline emphasis and give more thought to the language in the book, POINT OF COMBUSTION has the potential to be a really exciting romantic suspense sure to ignite even the hardest to light fuse. As it is, fans of erotica will find themselves satisfied, but those looking for suspense will sadly be surely disappointed.
