RAVENS OF AVALON is a rich story of life in the distant past, as it follows the life of Boudica from the time she is sent to the Druids. The Romans have been taking over Britannia, slowly changing the people into no more than serfs to the conquerors. As the Druids try to keep their way of life, some of the kings and princes plan revolts using the priests and priestess’ magic to help them. Boudica makes the choice to marry instead of staying in Mona and joining them. When she marries Prasutagos, it is to forge a link between Iceni clans, so it takes a while for affection and love to grow. Rome is a cruel master and greedy for gold, making the people either hate them or become like them to survive. When the king dies, Boudica finds herself keeping the tribe together and her daughters out of trouble. But events over-take even her when they are brutalized, and she calls the tribes to rebel.

This is a book for anyone interested in history, mixed with the ancient magic of Avalon and the Isles of Britannia and Ireland. The story telling is spectacular as the reader finds themselves in the midst of battles, as the people try to retain their identity. The characters are many in this book and can be a bit overwhelming sometimes, but the rich tapestry the author has woven slowly sucked this reviewer into another time and place. The goddess Morrigan of the Ravens is brought to life as death and destruction sweeps across the land, in the after-math, children were born from rape and trained in secret as a band of ravens. There are flash backs and magical moments as mist is conjured to keep the enemy guessing. From chariots drawn by horses to the famous legions of Rome, the gold they wore, a sign of who they were, made this an interesting read.
