Lord Ian Sutcombe is heavily in debt. His only chance is to marry a wealthy heiress. Hannah Leeds’ father arranges for her marriage to Ian. Hannah having been disappointed in love agrees to a marriage of convenience.

A BRIDE FOR HIS CONVENIENCE is based on a well-used premise in the historical romance genre but the author turns this into a sparkling story. Ian is a man who is a victim of family circumstances. His family has depleted all their assets and he is left with no option but to sell himself to a rich bride. Hannah is a woman who no longer believes in love. She was terribly hurt in the past and now just wants children of her own to love. Ian and Hannah are fully developed and realized characters. The author does a superb job of delineating their personalities. Readers will come to know them very well and they are very likable. Their relationship grows slowly and steadily thus giving readers valuable insight to their characters. This lead couple is wonderful. They are honest about their expectations. Ian and Hannah enter their marriage of convenience with full knowledge of what each will contribute to it. It takes them by surprise when love enters their relationship. The romance between them doesn’t feel artificial or fake.

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Layton’s books and this one is a surefire winner. Many writers have used the “marriage of convenience” plot but it is the characters and how the writer develops the story that makes this a standout! Ian and Hannah are a memorable couple and readers will fall in love with them!
