Nikolai is searching for a killer. Someone has been targeting Gen One vampires for extinction and the Order decided to reach out to all the Gen Ones for their cooperation to search for the killers. Sergei Yakut declined the Order’s invitation so Nikolai has been dispatched to talk to him. Renata is a breedmate under Sergei’s control. Her meeting with Nikolai is explosive and they find themselves fated to meet again.
Veil of Midnight features the pairing of Nikolai and Renata who will arouse the readers’ interest. Nikolai is a powerful and very strong character. He definitely fits the mold of the alpha male. His attraction to Renata is instantaneous. She definitely knocks him for a loop on the emotional level. He never thought he would find a woman that would turn his world around but she does. Renata is more than capable of holding her own with him. Her past is heart-wrenching and the author gives us her story in full details. We get to know her very well and we get into her head. Her relationship with Mira is wonderful. Renata’s mothering instinct is strong and she will do anything for Mira. The combination of Renata and Nikolai works. We have two compelling characters that match each other on all levels. At times, they both have to bend and these are the moments when they feel real. I do have to mention the minor storyline featuring Reichen was fascinating to me. This reader wanted to know what happened to Reichen and hopes his story will be forthcoming.
Veil of Midnight is the fifth book in the Midnight Breed series. As in her previous books, there is a lot happening in this world, Ms. Adrian is building and expanding her world with new characters as well as adding twists to her story. There is plenty to enjoy in her newest book and we look forward to the next one.
