Katie MacAlister’s second Silver Dragon book, UP IN SMOKE, is an hilarity-filled dragon adventure that positively burns up the pages faster than you can turn them.

The follow-up novel to Playing with Fire, UP IN SMOKE once again highlights the lives of doppelganger May Northcott and her very sexy mate, the Silver Dragon Wyvern, Gabriel Tauhou. As the story begins, May is forced to become Consort to Demon Lord Magoth because she broke the rules of the Otherworld and gave a dragon shard that Magoth coveted to its rightful owner, Gabriel. Gabriel, in an effort to get May out of Magoth’s evil clutches, discovers a way for them to be together. Unfortunately, it means May has to become Magoth’s Consort and allows him to enter the human realm with her. The upside is that Magoth’s powers are extremely diminished when he is in the human realm. A win/win situation all the way around, right?

Katie MacAlister’s dragons are all sexy and hot (excuse the pun, please), and extremely protective of their mates. One look from Gabriel sets May on fire, sometimes literally. When May accidentally ends up with the dragon shard as part of her, all sorts of unusual and amusing things start happening. But as enjoyable as these two characters are to read, without their surrounding cast, May’s twin Cyrene (from Playing with Fire), Aisling Grey and Drake (her mate and wyvern of the Green Dragons from the Aisling Grey books that these two Silver Dragon books have spun off from) and Aisling’s demon Newfoundland Jim, UP IN SMOKE would not have been nearly as smoking as it was (okay, pun intended).

As always, Katie MacAlister’s writing style is fast-paced and funny. Her characters are always getting into one crazy dilemma after another and those bossy macho dragons ignite the pages with their heated passion. You don’t need to read the first Silver Dragon book to understand the plotline, but of course, the first book does give some insight into the other characters in the book as do the Aisling Grey books that they spun from. And as almost always with MacAlister, UP IN SMOKE sets up several characters for stories of their own very nicely building anticipation for what is to come. This MacAlister fan is once again looking forward to the next dragon book to hit the paranormal romance scene from this cleverly humorous and very talented author. One can only hope the next book features Kostya and Cyrene (she says hoping a certain author is reading this review).
