Kate Peach is a poor woman. She makes gloves and is mistress to Hugh Traylor. She was once the lover of Francis Quoynt, a firemaster who would rather make fireworks than war. Francis abandoned Kate and the plague took her family. She has to hide her Catholicism as England has become a hot spot of rebellion. Conspiracies abound and one in particular draws Francis into it’s web. There is a plot to kill King James, and this plot calls for a lot of gunpowder. Francis is asked to provide this gunpowder for Guy Fawkes and his fellow plotters. Higher powers tell Francis to carry out the request and in his dealings with Fawkes he meets up with Kate again. This time as enemies, but the flame of romance burns bright.
This is a powerful story that draws the reader into it’s web and carries her into a world of conspiracy, treachery and love. Being English myself, and a lover of history, I found this story quite fascinating. Christie Dickason has taken all the facts of this very important part of our history and has looked beyond to what might have possibly taken place. She’s written about believable characters and added a very believable plot. I loved this story and will definitely read more from this author. The ending of the story was a bit of a surprise, which was really nice. This author sure keeps the reader on her toes. If you enjoy a really good historical novel then be sure to read this one. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
