Set in a not too distant future where shapeshifters are trying to take over the world, Missy Jane’s THEY CALL ME DEATH is the story of one woman’s battle to live in a world where distinguishing the animals from the humans is becoming more and more difficult every day.
After the shifters come out to the world in a bloody battle that leaves North America divided, Alexia Williams finds herself a soldier for the Combined Human States Army guarding the border that keeps humans and shifters apart. Her husband and son were killed in the initial battle and her life now is nothing but survival and the job. Alexia has become very good at her job and has no sympathy for the animals until one of them saves her life.
Andor is a centuries old golden eagle shifter, looking for human help to find missing shifters he believes are on Alexia’s side of the wall. Through Andor, Alexia discovers that just like people, not all shifters are evil animals. Humans have evil among them too. Andor and Alexia learn to trust each other as they journey into the shifter lands and back in search of the missing shifters.
This reader enjoys stories set in a post apocalypse earth. Missy Jane’s alternative reality highlights the anger and prejudice that come from refusal to try to understand people that are different than us and are viewed as a threat. When Alexia and Andor are forced to spend time working closely together, Alexia discovers that though Andor could be a serious danger to her, he isn’t. Her leery respect turns to love as the story unfolds and we discover who the real animals are in this story.
The storyline moves along quickly as Alexia relearns everything she knows of the shapeshifters while searching with Andor for the missing shifters. The characters are multifaceted with serious trust issues. Alexia’s personal journal is painful and heartwarming. This reader found Missy Jane’s THEY CALL ME DEATH thoroughly entertaining, original and fresh. This is an author to keep on the lookout for.
