Circumstances have brought Dorritt and her family heading west to join Stephen Austin’s settlement and try to get their fortune back in Texas. Her stepfather had gambled away the family fortune and now has this wild idea that in Texas, they can make their way back into fine society. Dorritt only wants one thing, her freedom. She plans on becoming a teacher. The trek across the wild lands, her mother’s physical weakness and her stepfather’s cruelty try her whole faith. Then they meet Quinn, a man who knows his way around the frontier and he agrees to help them on their way. There is plenty of danger on the way. Mexico has made herself independent from the Spanish Crown, armies roam the forests and Comanche are marauding the prairies. Dorritt and Quinn need to put their trust in God in order to get the desires of their hearts.
This is a delightful story that takes the reader back to the wild west and all its dangers. It’s also a time where women were not more than housekeepers and child minders and to marry well was the most important thing. Dorritt is refreshing in that she really wants to be independent and is not looking for marriage. In this story, we find a woman who strongly believes in God and constantly looks to Him for help. I really enjoyed this story and the inspirational elements were well incorporated into the story and there was no ‘preaching’ at the reader. The romance was sweet and subtlely tender with not more than a kiss shared between Dorritt and Quinn, but still, that sexual tension simmered between them. This is also an exciting story as their path is fraught with dangers, both outside and inside. I can recommend this story for those of you who like their romance more on the sweet side.
